Day 3 June 22 Woke up cold again this morning, boy I need to get used to these east coast chilly mornings!!!! Maybe tonight I will try to put on more layers!!! We had breakfast and then meetings all morning. Lunch was good we had a taco bar, then we had to take all the campers bags to their cabins. Boy, did they pack about 3 times more then I did and their clothes are littler then mine!! Heavy Heavy bags, but luckily all the carrying was down hill. We then got dressed for Olympics, I was on the black team (who won 3rd place WOOT WOOT. Black attack, Black Black attack!!!) There were 8 different teams and we played games such as Blindfolded Dogdeball, Blanket Volleyball, human foosball, and backwards softball. Crazy crazy games!!!! After ... read more

Saturday, June 20 (White Mountains Day 2): Today is our day to tour the Northern and part of the Central regions of the White Mountains. First, we headed up to Lancaster to check out the Fuller’s Sugarhouse and their real maple syrup. Lancaster was a nice small town and Fuller’s had a great assortment of maple syrups and products. We ended up buying a larger jug of medium amber for our girls and smaller jugs of light amber and Grade B for us. Soon after we left Lancaster on our way to see the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, we noticed a car stopped on the right side of the road with what appeared to be 3 ladies. Figuring at first that they had car trouble, I slowed down and realized that they were stopped to photograph ... read more

My flight left at 5am in the morning and I flew to Minneapolis where I sat next to a family who was going to Las Vegas on a on-the-spur-trip. I sat next to a little girl who had not flown before and we talked the whole way, she was a 6th grader, I then found my flight in Minneapolis and flew to Chicago where I sat next to an older couple who just got back from vacation in Hawaii. I had a longer layover where I got something to eat and waited till my flight to Boston where I sat next to a boy my age who was from Boston and had a thick accent! I tried to get as much sleep as I could because I did not sleep at all the night before! I ... read more

Friday, June 19 (White Mountains Day 1): We got up early enough today, but having noticed a Jeep dealer nearby, we’d decided to have an overdue oil change done and the tires checked. The mechanic said the tires had some wear left on them, but that the front brakes were in need of replacement, with 2mm left. I told them I’d like to get it done now, but that we were on vacation and didn’t want to lose the 3 hours or so it would take to do. Happily, the service guy told us they’d left us have a free loaner for the day, so we jumped in their KIA Sportage and away we went, around 10am. We decided to drive south and east on smaller roads rather than the Interstate so we could check on ... read more

What is an adventure? We sometimes convince ourselves that we must travel thousands of miles over foreign airspace illegally stowed on a cargo plane filled with illicit narcotics destined for a nation run by a brutal dictatorship that doesn’t hesitate to execute offending foreigners. Our only escape is to parachute, where we find ourselves floating amongst the shark infested waters of the South Pacific. As dehydration induced hallucinations kick in, we wash up on shore only to find an island of provocative women (or men depending on your preference) who have their way with our innocence. We eventually make it home to review our embellishments with everyone willing to listen. I have always wondered why travel is so important, when our activities right here at home can easily top any drunken stumble up to the zenith ... read more

I didn't want to make my first hike back east too easy... So my friend, Tom had this hike out in the White Mountains that he had been planning for twenty years or so. He pitched the idea of doing this hike before I started my new job as a public educator and suffering from a little mountain withdrawal, I said "sure, let's see what the White Mountains look like". I wasn't sure exactly what to expect as I have never played out in the White Mountains before. If you aren't familiar with the White Mountains let me inform you of what I know. * Mount Washington has the craziest weather on the east coast and perhaps the nation. It is in the center of two giant air masses/ weather systems and is encased in clouds ... read more

I was hoping to catch a sunrise at the summit early morning today. And by early I mean 3:30 am. That was when the gate was opened to visitors. This isn't a routine, it happens only 3 times a year and we just happened to be there on one of those days. Doug was kind of hoping the same but we both knew how we are like when it comes to getting up that early. Yeah, I guess you know we didn't make it. When I first opened my eyes that morning, I heard the rain. That gave us a reason to not feel bad for not making it. We took our time a bit in the morning, got breakfast at our Inn before heading to Mt.Washington. We went north on 16 for about 20 minutes ... read more

About 2.5-hour drive from Boston and we were in Franconia, New Hampshire. We have already entered White Mountain National Forest and all I can tell is that it's huge and there are several places to visit: waterfalls, view points, trails, caves, and forest. I definitely have things to keep me busy when I'm here again. Lost River Gorge, just a few miles off of route 3 to the west, belongs to a private party and is open to public for a fee of $13. The entire trail is boardwalk helps protect plants on the ground from tourist's footsteps. I took pleasure in hiking on this twisty boardwalk, let it lead me up and down, to the left and to the right. It took me to where the water from the falls was dropped into a creek, ... read more
