You thought I was referring to wine. But I am referring to a visit to dear, longtime friends. Vintage Vegas generally refers to the older hotels and motels, or the type of fashion. Or, in my case, it refers to having a good time, the old-fashioned way. Our dear friend Debbie is headed to a golf tournament at La Quinta, so I will keep Ken company while she is gone. Her golf partner, Laura is also going, so her husband Jim, a former orthopedic surgeon will join our card games and dinners. As it turns out, the girls decided not to play in the Arizona golf tournament. So, we will enjoy everyone's company on this trip, after all! You are probably wondering what we will do for three days. One, we will play lots of cards. ... read more

The Valley of Fire is a National park in Clark County, Nevada. It is formed by bright, stunning, red Aztec sandstone and known for over 2,000 year old petroglyphs; a type of rock art that is carved or engraved on the rocks surface. My first experience witnessing petroglyphs. It was that moment when the sunset hit the valley it really looked as if it was on fire. The way the light illuminated the red sandstone was a fantastic sight.... read more

Yes, we have all been to Vegas a dozen times or more. Nothing surprises us anymore. The Strip, mega-casinos, and various attractions seem to blend in now. But I rarely hit the Strip, or even downtown, any longer. I head out to Summerlin, where my dear friends reside. Their gated community is an oasis in the Valley and feels like it could be located anywhere in the country. So, this trip, like many others, will not involve the Strip, shows, gambling, or fancy dinners. Instead, and I must emphasize preferably, I will spend my time out in Summerlin, playing cards, and enjoying my friends, Ken and Debbie. You might ask what we do with our time. Since I no longer play golf, the TPC Summerlin course sits not more than a 3 wood from their home. ... read more

Written in 2008!!! Instead of telling you what we do or see in Vegas, I want to digress a little. Did you ever just stop and watch people walking around this city? I am sure it is an adequate demographic representation of our country, We see tourists, cowboys, sourdoughs, young couples, gays, families, seniors, Hawaiians, and deadbeats. I know of very few people who have really made tons of money from a gambling trip to Vegas. I hear even professional gamblers have problems here. I do know that if you win too much, they will take you into a room and try to find out more about you. That is S.O.P. in this town. Of course, they want to get the money back, so they invite you to come back ... read more

The Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route starts in Jarbidge, Nevada, a few miles south of the state line. Don't ask me why we have to drive 170 mi South from Boise to get there. I think the route designers wanted to showcase the high desert. So that when you finally reach the mountains you are overjoyed. The drive down was a lot of fun. We did the long stretch South on high speed black top. Then we headed East to our destination on gravel, crossing a series of streams and canyons. The water runs South to North here, ending up in the Snake River. Crossing these water courses was interesting, until we reached the final drop off the plateau down to Jarbidge. The road down the side of the cliff had a big Road Closed sign, so ... read more

I'm back at it, after a long time. Curaçao is going through another lockdown, so I decided to take advantage of the time I have and to continue writing. This time I went to the USA again, it was my 6th visit to the country. This time with J&S Tours, the same travel agency from Curaçao I went to New York and Niagara Falls with back in October 2017. It was December 2018 when I went as a coordinator with a group of 10 travellers from Curaçao to Sin City. It was my second time in Las Vegas, first time being December 2010. If it wasn't for J&S Tours, I don't think I would have been there for a second time now. Do not get me wrong: it is a nice place and definitely worth visiting ... read more

We left Vegas Monday morning. We were home by 5pm. Just a few things of note.... We are still technically in a pandemic. You would never really know this in Vegas. No one was ever-ever-ever following the 6-foot rule. Masks were being worn by basically everyone everywhere but many people weren't covering their noses with their masks (even waitresses). Saturday, when the full-on young crowd was here, masks were optional outside everywhere it seemed. They didn't care. There were some crowded places at times during this trip so we were shocked. Thankfully, there were free mask dispensers and hand sanitizer dispensers at every entrance to our hotel and there were a lot of ways in and out of our hotel. We took advantage of the free masks and the sanitizers on a regular basis. I changed ... read more

Sunday was a good day in Vegas. We didn't do too much before noon today. Lunch was at Gordon Ramsay's Burgers here in Planet Hollywood. We had noon reservations. There are no menus. You use your phone to scan the code on a small card they give you so your menu shows-up on your phone. The options are basic but nice. We both ordered a burger (Dubliner, 3 cheese for me and I'm not sure what he ordered) and we also got some parmesan truffle fries to split. I ordered a white sangria with pear Prosecco and Chardonnay with a hint of cinnamon. It was okay. My burger was fine, nothing amazing. Kamie's was medium and it was raw in the middle - not pink - raw. He barely ate half. We thought the fries were ... read more
