Saturday 14th March 2009 I had done Turtlehead before and it is one of my favourites in Red Rock. I wanted so show Lisa and as we couldn't leave the pups that long, we decided to take them with us. We also took rucksacks to carry them if they got too tired (we checked them for fit before we left). Turns out the pups both did really well. Pai had to go in the rucksack for 20 mins near the top, but I took him out for the final push - so it looked he did it all on his own - in case there were any other doggies up there. It is a demanding hike, but the views are amazing. Some video here The pups slept well that afternoon! ... read more

Friday 13th March 2009 I took Pai for his first hike in Red Rock Canyon. The closest stop is Calico Basin (10 mins from home) so we started there. We had a nice stroll around with no particular aim in mind. The sun was getting low in the sky so it was just a quick one - a warm up for Pai's Adventures in Red Rock. ... read more

Wednesday 4th March 2009 I got away from the mutts for a quick, easy hike at Fossil Ridge. It is outside the Red Rock Canyon conservation area, about a mile further along the road. I met with a really nice group of people. I hope to get out to more 'quick' hikes until the mutts are old enough to come on hikes with me.... read more

Saturday 14th February 2009 Calico Tank is one of my favourite 'short & easy' hikes in Red Rock because it provides a great variety of scenery and then their is a great view of Vegas at the end (which I forgot to photgraph - Doh!).... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Red Rock Canyon February 10th 2009

Tuesday 10th February 2009 Tom and I decided to hike up Le Madre Springs in the snow. We aimed to find the old hut and mines above the spring head. Red Rock Canyon area was looking stunning as we drove in. The first part of the hike is the 1/4 of the White Rock Hills Loop, so was familiar ground to me. Then we peel off to the left and start to head up. Not far from the spring head we met a guy who had just been up to the hut and was on his way home. He said to just follow his steps in the snow. He was right - he was the first and only one up there that day so it was easy to follow his steps. Mostly the trail followed a ... read more

Thursday 5th February 2009 I was feeling REALLY tired (see the eyes in photos/video) so decided to take a short-ish hike to Keystone Thrust. It is where older rock (volcanic grey stuff) got pushed up on top of much younger (red sand stone) rock during a geological 'thrust'... I got there pretty quickly so decided to climb up the wash to the nearby hills with interesting looking (for me anyway) outcrops of rock. I found an interesting alternative to 'letter boxing' at one of them (see the video link below). Also turns out that volcanic rock is really sharp - cuts your hands up really easy! After I peaked the second nearby hill I decided to 'cross country' it directly back to the car. See the video clip here ... read more

Friday 30th January 2009 A meet up with three ladies from a hiking Meetup group in Vegas and did a relatively flat loop around White Rock Hills in Red Rock Canyon. This would be a good walk (2.5 to 3 hours) for those not into big hikes. I liked how things changed as we went on to the shaded side of the White Rock Hills. I kept looking up and wondering how to climb to the top of them - one day.... read more

Thursday 29th January 2009 I met Tom on a hike to Goldstrike Springs the day before and he had offered to hike Bridge Mountain with me the next day. I had heard great things about this hike and it was on my wish list before I even got to Vegas. I was pleased to have a 'veteran' to go with on my first hike up there, especially in the icy conditions we faced. Tom picked me up and we drove in to the Red Rock Canyon. Part way round the scenic drive is a track called Rocky Gap Road. It is a 4x4-only track that heads northwest from Red Rock. It took about 30 mins to get to the point to start the hike. We headed out from the car around 9.30am. It was a nice ... read more

Tuesday 27th January 2009 I had been coming to Las Vegas almost every month (for a week or two at a time) since my partner Lisa moved out here in April 2008. And so I had been to Red Rock Canyon before (it is only 20 mins from our house). But Now I had moved here properly and this was now my 'back yard' to play in - and what a back yard!!! If anyone visits Vegas - sure see the Strip and see the Grand Canyon, but if you have any spare time - come see Red Rock! There are loads of hikes all over Red Rock (RR) and I intend to do them all! I had done a few before and so started to fill in the gaps. Calico Hills is one of the ... read more

Saturday 2nd August Saturday brought more lovely weather, and Amy thought it would be good to combine seeing Richard off to the airport with a convenient detour to the outlet malls! Surprise, surprise! After seeing Richard off to the airport we looked at the map and decided to head for the Red Rock Canyon, 30 mins outside of Vegas. It was still mega hot when we arrived, so just a short walk was in order, but it was still worth it as we saw a sunbathing lizard and some beautiful rock formations. Next was the task of finding somewhere to stay. We lucked out with an old ranch style motel with a lot more to offer than just a room!! We had a very rustic traditional dinner in the ranch restaurant, before heading to the laundry ... read more
