For the past few months, I've been getting antsy again. I don't get much time to travel, working two jobs and all, but sometimes you just have to get away for your own sanity. Well, sanity can sometimes be lost just figuring out where to go, at least for me. First I thought about going back to Japan. I had such a great time in April that I would love to go back. But after thinking about it, I wasn't sure I wanted such an expensive trip this time around. Staying in Tokyo, or even traveling around the countryside is a little pricey. So then I drooled over Around the World plane tickets, planning out all of these exotic destinations which I knew I could never afford, nor have the time to visit, I just wondered ... read more

This was a long and boring trip, hence the long and boring story. Enjoy my insanity. Man, what a night. Got off work at midnight, went around and did some last minute packing and laundry, and thought I’d have no problem dozing off at about 1am or so. Alas, that didn’t seem to work out. I guess I was more anxious about the trip than I thought. After tossing and turning for a while, I got out of bed and took care of a few things I was going to do in the morning. Tried to sleep again… wasn’t happening. Got up and surfed the net a bit, checked out a few sites, posted a few messages. It’s now 3am; I have to be up at 6am to be ready for the Taxi at about 7:15. ... read more

So last weekend I decided, on a whim, that I wanted to go to Japan. Now I've been saving for a trip to Europe next year, but I really need a break from work. So, after making a joke with some friends about flying over to Japan to check out the premiere of a new movie, I found that the flights were very reasonable. I went ahead and booked the flight, booked a Hostel, then asked for time off work. Little backwards eh? I'm leaving April 16th for 10 days, although I lose a day or two in travel... oh well. I'll be there for Cherry Blossom time too, which I hear is one of the most beautiful times of year for Japan. I can hardly wait. Please feel free to drop me a line if ... read more

Nathan and I decide to accompany Max and Charles to their new motel which is located even deeper down town. Nathan and I are due to fly back to San Francisco today whilst Max and Charles are going to hang out in Vegas for while longer before finally heading to L.A. It's very sad and after our last lunch together we head to the old strip to enable Nathan and I to hail a cab. The walk takes about 20 minutes and I don't think I've had to traverse such distance with my luggage in tow since we arrived. Not that my bag is heavy (indeed I have travelled, as always, very light) but it's mid-day and Vegas is, in effect, situated right in the middle of the Mojave desert. Nathan asks me to imagine being ... read more

Our motel is situated in downtown Las Vegas so it makes sense to check the area out. It's kind of iconic really, featuring as it does in many an old film set in Vegas. You may have seen it in the James Bond feature 'Diamonds are Forever'? The old strip isn't as bombastic as the face of Vegas you might see on TV, but before your New York New York, Luxor and Excalibur were built, this is was where it was at. Las Vegas continues to expand but it has always been marked with auspicious beginnings. It formed as a stop off point for those travelling to Las Angeles and was designed as the pivotal station when the railroad was expanded west to reach California. Why? Because the Las Vegas valley was a water rich oasis. ... read more

My limited experience of American motels has led me to deduce thus: Their exterior often betrays the interior decor. From the outside they look like they do in the movies, stuck in a pleasing 1970's time warp which fits in with the whole road trip experience very nicely thank you. But once you enter the experience is surprisingly gentrified. It's almost like stopping off at your Grandmothers. That is to say that everything is very tidy, floral patterns are plentiful and there will be things like doilies and brass door knobs that give it an oddly European feel. Our motel in Santa Barbara was very typical of this. Breakfast was taken in an area that would not have seemed out of place in a typical English Bed & Breakfast. We know this because despite us all ... read more
