Luckily we had a late checkout today as Marnee and I were feeling more than a little worse for wear. After our super late night and huge amounts of alcohol consumed the last thing we felt like doing was getting up to pack but we did it. We packed our things and left them in the room then walked down the road to California Pizza Kitchen for some food. Marnee got pizza again, Nick got a sausage and egg muffin and baked fries and I got some Pesto cream penne with chicken, a basil pesto cream, sundried tomatoes and parmesan. It probably doesn’t sound ideal as a hangover cure but I think it helped soak up some of the booze. After lunch we headed back to the hotel, changed and checked-out.
We caught a cab from out the front of the hotel to Chicago Airport for our 2pm flight with Spirit Airways to Las Vegas.
We checked-in, boarded and I was asleep before we even took off. I slept nearly the entire three and a half hour flight, so that was good.
We arrived in Las Vegas at 3.46pm local time. Nick was surprised that there were even pokies in the airport here as soon as you walked out of your gate. We went and collected our bags and jumped in a cab to the Luxor Hotel, our home for the next two nights.
The Luxor is an Egyptian themed hotel so the main part is in the shape of a pyramid and there is a giant sphinx out the front. Once inside, there were people and pokies everywhere. We lined up to check-in and Nick attempted the $20 sandwich and it worked.
The idea behind the $20 sandwich is when you check into a hotel you simply slip the front desk clerk a $20 bill with your credit card, while asking "Do you have any complimentary upgrades available?" The general rule of thumb is that the front desk clerk will check for upgrades and if they cannot find anything they will return the $20 tip, making it risk free! And this is exactly what happened. She took the $20 bill and slipped it in to a slot on the desk without even flinching and said yes we could upgrade for ‘free’ to a much bigger room; amazing!
We made our way up to our room and what a fantastic room it was. There were two huge beds, a giant bathroom, a spa along the window and another room that had a couch and TV in it, crazy.
After we got organised and cleaned up we decided to go for some dinner. We ended up in the Excalibur Hotel where we found an Italian Restaurant called Buca di Beppo. The food was fantastic but they sold meals in family sizes. So we got a family sized meatballs and a family sized schnitzels. The bowl of meatballs was huge and the schnitzels came with three on the plate. We got drinks too and there was about 1L of soft drink in each glass.
After dinner we decided we’d take a stroll down Las Vegas Blvd. We walked in and out of various hotels for quite a while. In true Las Vegas style there was people everywhere, street performers, flicker card guys and spruikers trying to get you to their clubs.
We eventually turned around to head back to the hotel and came across this guy creating the most fantastic works of art using a few different shapes and spray cans.
We eventually made it back to the hotel, absolutely spent, had a shower and hit the hay. The beds in the Luxor were fantastic, so amazing.
