Helicopter flights had been cancelled for a few days due to bad weather but when we woke up on Sunday it was clear blue skies so our driver picked us up to head for the airport helipad. After a safety video all seven passengers got into the helicopter, 6 behind the pilot and 1 up front. It was a tight squeeze but we all buckled up and donned headsets, Sue of course had to sit facing the direction of travel. She went one better on the return leg as the seat next to the pilot was vacant. The views were magnificent as we flew east over the Nevada desert towards the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the Colorado River. It got better still as we approached the Grand Canyon and pilot Dave kept us informed of ... read more

Last year, my family and I traveled to Las Vegas and made a stop at Hoover Dam. This was the fourth time for me since the beginning of the construction of the bridge over the dam. The construction was aimed at diverting traffic away from the dam for security reasons. It was a massive undertaking which took time, labor and money to complete. In March 2012, the American Society of Civil Engineers awarded the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge with the 2012 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award, is also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge. From my previous blog you probably know that we crossed the bridge on our way to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon. Last week, we decided to make another trip to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon where we had ... read more

Our main event today was visiting Hoover Dam. It turned out that we came on a good day, which was surprising since it was a Saturday, because we were able to park really easily and we didn't have to wait that long for our tour to start. Our tour guide told us that on other days in the summer it could be a 2 hour wait just to park. We decided to do the full blown Dam Tour. There is also a Power Plant Tour, or just entrance to the Visitor's Center. But, we picked the Dam Tour because you get to do everything. We got to be part of the Power Plant Tour where you go down to the power plant. First, we went into a tunnel where we were standing above a 90-foot diameter ... read more

Seems Like three years. Is it at least August yet? No, not even close. I am sure I am aging faster over here in the west, but time sure goes a lot slower. She is over there in the far east doing new and exciting and wonderful things and I am here at work just trying to stay awake. Here are some pics from AAron's ball game 3/21/09. Melissa and Morissa and AAron and Me. In the picture of me and just the hat I was thinking about "The Letter" so I did not really need to hold on to the hat with my hands. OK I chickened out with Me & Just the Hat.... read more

We are just 2 days away from leaving for our summer travels. We are planning a trip to Yosemite National Park and from there will go to the coast and then follow the Pacific Coast to the Portland, OR area. We will then head east along the Columbia River Gorge with a stop in the Tri-Cities area. We will then head to Lewiston, ID for a short stop and then on to Montana where we plan to spend 4-5 weeks visiting the state. Although Barb grew up in "Big Sky Country" there is a lot neither of us have seen. We plan to visit family along the way, visit familiar and unfamiliar sites, and do some bicycling and kayaking as well. If you haven't been on our blog before, we will post messages and pictures regularly ... read more

We arrived home Sunday, August 5, on our 35th wedding anniversary. What a great trip. The latter part of our trip was filled with visiting friends and relatives and a surprise purchase. We visited friends and family in Great Falls as well as a trip to the Montana State Fair where we stopped by the Sons of Norway booth for a Viking Meatball. This is a LARGE meatball on a stick made from 3 meats and a "secret" spice mixture. The meatballs are cooked ahead of time then put on a stick, dipped in a batter and deep fat fried before serving. Tasty, but very filling. Much, much better than poutine. From Great Falls we went to Helena for an afternoon visit with my aunt Jessie (my father's sister) and cousin Judy. We continued on to ... read more

Hi Everyone, After finishing off in Las Vegas we took ourselves to the airport and rented a car. (Carries idea not mine I had to drive lol ) We decided to do a road trip for 10 days making our way from Las Vegas to Denver stopping at Bolder city, Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon , Bryce Canyon and Salt lake city and then finally finishing off in Denver. We phoned the airport and got quoted 600 dollars for the 10 days which we thought was brilliant, when we got there after adding on insurances etc it was 1100 dollars LOL what a joke!! we took it anyways and decided to leave it back after 5 days but we squeezed it all in near enough anyways. 1st off we headed from the airport Las Vegas to Bolder ... read more

Today’s breakfast buffet was incredible. We found it in Henderson en route to the Hoover Dam. What a remarkable scene. The kids spirits were kind of down when we arrived to the dam because everyone was tired, but most found it interesting. Unfortunately, Tom has been fighting a cold, so his experience was not as enjoyable as it could have been. The rest of this day was spent in the car driving to the Red Feather Lodge. We go to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. Boy, the temperature sure dropped as we climbed in elevation. ... read more
