At some point in the night Mark and I got an unexpected wakeup call as we slept on the picnic tables, when the rain came. I woke up and quickly realised what was happening, and seeing Mark practically sprint to the van, I followed in pursuit, entering the van to discover we had woken Todd up very abruptly. For obvious reasons he didn’t look too pleased that he has been woken, and we both quickly settled down on a row each, before the van fell into silence again as we all got back to sleep. Only problem was I’d set myself up in my sleeping bag the wrong way on the row. Whilst Todd and Mark were lying with their heads by the side of the van and their legs hanging over the aisle at the ... read more

Photos from this day at Yellowstone It was almost possible with our schedule to photograph the sunrise in Yellowstone and sunset in Yosemite on the same day, this one. We had to fly Snafu Airlines to Yosemite so we were lucky to make Fresno by sundown. Success this morning, however, depended only on my getting up on time and getting to the terraces in Mammoth Hot Springs without incident. The photos I got there were a big bonus; just getting there to "say" goodbye was the goal. Getting to Yosemite was also the goal; photographing the same day would have been a bonus. It was rut season for the elk, and they roam freely in and around Mammoth Hot Springs. Getting through is not as easy as you might have been thinking in the last paragraph. ... read more

Photos from this day at Yellowstonw National Park This was our daughter Celeste's birthday, and we celebrated her existence among the splendors of the first National Park in the world. She was our first child in our world, and a big reason why we smile when we see a waterfall or the night sky. Our children make the mountains more majestic, the seas more soothing and sometimes scary, the trees more friendly and the rocks more alive. They provide the sense for the maxim Leave No Trace. Since my back was still screaming at me, we didn't expect to do too much hiking for our shots, so most everything we got was quite near a road. The "Road" in Yellowstone can be described as a figure eight and that's what I'll use to describe our path ... read more

We really slowed down today, mother nature saw to that. I woke to the pitter patter of rain on the roof and the sky was gray and bleak. I said hooray. I have been on a tread mill and just couldn’t stop myself. There is so much to see here and I felt that if I wasn’t out there the chance of a lifetime was missed. I have got to hear the music and smell the flowers. So we lounged around I made the second half of the oatmeal pancakes with nuts and cleaned up a bit then went to take a shower. You have to understand what a big deal showers are here. Water is scarce and the park has one campground out of 15 that has a shower. I am in a private campground ... read more

I’m sorry to say that there was no more coyote activities last night. I did hear some grunting from bison but that is about it. I am amazed at the quiet in the campground at night. Quiet hours are 10pm to 7am and you could literally hear a pin drop. No traffic from roads, no airplanes, nothing,, it is comforting to me. Even when you walk in the woods and stop if there is no wind, there is no sound but maybe a bird. What have we done to our planet? So it’s time to head out today for the north end of the park and we are on the road by 9 am. There is fog in the air but you can see the faint outline of the sun now and again promising a bright ... read more

Geo: 45.0319, -110.705After getting up at 6 am, we headed to eat breakfast at the same restaurant that we had left due to its high prices. While eating at Outlaws the night before, our waitress, Stormy, told us that the restaurant had a great inexpensive breakfast buffet. After eating, we still had an hour, so we went back to the hotel for a bit. The weather was a little chilly but no rain clouds. We got geared up for the trip. Naomi wore a wet suit, but since I was going to be just going along for the ride, I wore just the life jacket. We rafted with a family of 5. It was great! Naomi and I had a great time! Afterwards we headed back to the hotel to shower and change into dry clothes. ... read more

Geo: 45.0319, -110.705As Naomi was driving back to Mammoth, I spotted a pair of coyotes in the meadows. We pulled over to take some pictures of them. After getting back to the hotel, Naomi wasnt in the mood to eat out but I still wanted to try some of the local faire. So she texted me a Subway order (the only franchise restaurant in town) while I went to a place suggested by the hotel clerk called the Town Cafe. The cafe sat in the back of a gift shop and it was an old diner. All 10 tables/booths were full so I sat at the L-shape counter. I ordered a Club sandwich with fries at 8:10. By 8:40 I noticed the time (I was playing games on my phone and texting Naomi about the interesting ... read more

Geo: 45.0319, -110.705We got into Gardiner a little later than I had expected, but we settled in our 1st floor room. I stayed at this Super 8 eight years ago for about $60 a night. Today, it costs $150 a night! The main reason is it is peak season for Yellowstone National Park. The room had a king bed and a couch that folded out into a queen size bed. Naomi took the couch bed since the other bed was next to the air conditioner and I need to be cold to sleep. So far Naomi has been able to withstand my need for coldness. Naomi immediately plugged herself in to her online friends or worked on her laptop while I downloaded some pics and tried to get some blogging done for about an hour. It ... read more

September 27, 2009 Well we made it to Old Faithful…Here’s what happened. We all hoped and prayed all night that the road to Old Faithful would be open this morning…and it was. This meant that we could get to see her after driving one and a half hours…which we did. On the way, we kept seeing all of these interesting sights but we didn’t stop because our plan was to get to Old Faithful before the road was closed and then have a leisurely ride back, catching all the other areas. We got to Old Faithful just as she went off…what a thrill!!! There was a huge crowd and everyone was amazed! We watched a short film and were about to do some exploring when one of the rangers announced that they had just closed the ... read more

September 26, 2009 “Take off that Ranger hat so I can slap you across the face.” Today was somewhat disappointing….the fire in Yellowstone continues and the road to Old Faithful is closed. To see it we would have to drive around the park, the northern route, to get there. This would take three and a half hours, one way! We decided to drive north to a town called Livingston, a place Anthony Bourdain had done a show on. We were hoping to first go to Little Big Horn and hit Livingston on the way back. After driving about an hour we realized that Little Big Horn was another two hours! We went directly to Livingston instead. We visited a little restaurant named Pinky’s that Bourdain had highlighted. Donna recognized the owner right away from the show ... read more
