Tornados are usually in a hurry. They drop down from the sky, whiz across the land at 50 miles an hour for a minute or so, then dissipate or rise back up into the clouds. The tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, 2012, took it’s time. Meteorologists say it moved across the city at five miles an hour. It stayed on the ground for 32 minutes, leaving a path of destruction a mile wide and 22 miles long. Two to four vortices formed and circled each other, churning everything in their path at 225 to 250 miles an hour, like a giant KitchenAid mixer. Houses were lifted off their foundations. Trees were uprooted; those that remained were stripped of their leaves and bark. Cars and trucks were tossed and crushed. Virtually nothing survived intact. ... read more

Our Joplin team lead uses the F word a lot. Terri Gafford doesn’t use it when she hits her thumb with a hammer, although I’ve seen her pound a digit a time or two. No, she uses the F word when she’s telling us the plan for the next 24 hours. The key to a successful trip, she reminds us, is to be Flexible. Things happen; plans change. For example, we originally planned to stay at the Best Western in Joplin, but Terri and her husband, Chuck, checked it out just before we arrived and decided La Quinta would be safer and more comfortable. We were flexible, changed hotels, and found La Quinta to have a great breakfast and a free room for our team meetings. People volunteer on a Thrivent Builds tour so they can ... read more

It was a joy going to Joplin with a group of 10 strangers, who over the period of a week became great friends and workmates. We spent nearly every waking hour together. We ate every meal together. We worked hard. We played hard. We laughed and cried together. I asked each of my fellow volunteers to answer four questions about their experiences in Joplin. Here are their responses: 1. What has surprised you the most about Joplin? · The incredible progress and flurry of building activity. · The depth of hope, gratitude and faith in the people that live here. · It feels a lot like my hometown. I feel like I’m helping my own neighborhood, friends, family, loved ones. · Thankful Joplin residents…especially the new homeowners! Great progress in rebuilding this community. · Missing street ... read more

What’s the first thing you do after seeing your world turn upside down in 32 minutes? For Ed and Angela, survivors of the devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, 2011, it was to find their son, who had been working out in the gym two blocks away. Ed and Angela had been living on the first floor of a two-story apartment building. Like many others, they had ignored the tornado sirens until Angela saw the tornado coming toward them from out the kitchen window. They ran to the bathroom and lay on the floor, hugging each other, as the tornado ripped the apartment building from over their heads. They were saved by the bathroom door, which wedged itself between the wall and the vanity counter just above them. The roar of the tornado passed, ... read more

Grammy's point of view: We awoke to thunder and lighting, and a torrential downpour. The night before we went to a Cracker Barrell, for a chicken dinner that was deeeeelish. We got on the road early and headed to the Ozarks and they were beautiful. The road was 40 miles of mountains and trees, like we've never seen before. The overlooks , and hallows were wonderful, we've never seen anything like this. You always hear bad things about the Ozarks, but we only saw a few run-down shacks. We only came across one area of construction, and we went right thru. Next we headed to Branson, what a fun place. It's on the only real river in the area. From there we headed to Joplin, the weather was cool with a hint of rain. That evening ... read more

I seems no matter how well we prepare, we never leave any earlier than 10 AM. Today we left Oklahoma city heading east and north through the rest of Oklahoma, a small bit of Kansas, and in to Joplin, Missouri. Our first stop today was Pops, a new addition to Route 66. It's a modern tourist trap boasting over 500 type of soda and has a 66 foot tall neon soda bottle out front. We all picked out some flavors to try. Michelle grabbed a lemonade, tony another root beer and Anne choose a Shirley Temple flavor as well as an original recipie Dr. Pepper. Not too far down the road was a sight from a differnt century, the largest Round Barn in Oklahoma. It has been lovinly restored by the local farmers and now houses ... read more

Even though scattered thunderstorms were in the forecast, Wednesday morning June 16, 2010 was another blue-sky morning. The drive to the Joplin MO area was only about 1-1/2 hours. Since I wanted to stop at the Missouri Welcome Center, we started northbound on I-540. Like many interstate highways under development, I-540 is a controlled access highway in those sections that have been completed and a two- or four-lane highway in those segments that have not - in this case, US 71. The only portion of our route that was not controlled access was a thirteen-mile stretch right at the AR-MO line. Originally, we had planned to stop at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Bella Vista AR on the way to Joplin. When we visited the monument on June 11, I was baffled at the volume ... read more
