The Gulf Coast of Mississippi From New Orleans we followed on our guideline Route 10 east over the edge of Lake Ponchartrain. We did not cross the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway that crosses the large lake that broke through the levees and flooded the bowl of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. The causeway crosses its center headed northwards for nearly 24 miles (36.8 km) and is the world’s longest bridge over continuous water. We crossed over the easterly bridge, called the ‘Twin Spans’ bridge that had been severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina and its easterly span had only reopened in July 2009. This bridge is 5.4 miles long (about 8.7km) and is very impressive (and our first experience of these long southern bridges that I have already written about). We drove very slow and admired the view ... read more

Geo: 30.447, -88.841Today we began our trip back towards New Orleans. We left Pensacola and headed along the Gulf Highway through Perdido Key and Orange Beach. No pictures because area was similar to yesterday except even more high rise condo buildings. The area is basically a long Island which parallels the mainland shore. Definitely a tourist and vacation area with lots of vacation rentals, surf shops and restaurants. We then head north and west through Foley and Magnolia Springs to Fairhope which is a picturesque town. Along the way we stopped in to a pecan processing facility, a cute little coffee shop and a restaurant known for throwing rolls. Apparently the practice is that if a customer is waiting for his meal and is hungry the waiters will throw a roll at the customer. In Fairhope ... read more

Many of you know this, but for those who don't, I have moved. Sort of. Ugh. Tis a looooong story. But here is the short(ish) version. We recently discovered mold in the trailer (particularly in Ingrid's bathroom). Upon inspection, we were told we couldn't live there any more. I was really bummed about this since we were just getting settled in and I was loving having my own room and having the awesome comfy chairs in the living room, etc. Anyway, this was decided on Thursday and so Thursday night Lauren had as sleepover her house cause she didn't want us sleeping in the trailer. That was lovely. I slept on her couch, which was very comfortable. Friday after work we had previous plans to dog-sit for Lauren and so that is what we did. Ingrid ... read more

Had a truly wonderful Easter. After church, I ate lunch and then baked the amazing rosemary facaccia bread that Ingrid usually makes (since she was at work). It actually didn't turn out half bad. Mid-afternoon we went to Lauren's house to begin our easter celebrations. When we got there, we discovered that miss Lauren had made us Easter baskets! It was the most lovely surprise. =) We proceeded to sit out on her driveway and dye eggs! =) It was lots of fun... I can't remember the last time I did it. Brought back good memories. It was amusing, because while we acted like kids and dyed eggs, we were also drinking wine. We found this juxtaposition to be entertaining. =) After egg dying, Lauren baked fish and sauteed green beans and we warmed up the ... read more

My weekend was quite uneventful, except for Saturday, which was the first real festival of the season in my area. It was really awesome! But before I go into that, I will briefly mention another awesome aspect of the day. =) In the morning Ingrid and I met up with Lauren for breakfast at a restaurant in Ocean Springs that Lauren had recommended as a good place to get breakfast out. I had been craving an omelett ever since we went to IHOP and so that is what I got. It was wonderful! Soooo much food. 3 egg omelett (which i got with cheese tomato and olives), hash browns, bacon (which I gave to Lauren and Ingrid), and a biscuit. So tasty, and relatively cheap considering the amount of food. I was pleased. And the restaurant ... read more

Obfuscator writes: The morning was a pleasant one, fairly bright, not raining, and cool. Our kind host at the New Orleans Guest House gave us a light breakfast of fruit and croissant, juice, and tea. It was tasty and hit the spot. We packed up our gear and checked out. Our plan was to tour New Orleans for a while, and then move on. As it turned out, we would spend pretty much the whole day there, which was all right, since we didn't really have anywhere else we needed to be. We started off by finding a parking lot in the French Quarter, where we could leave our car for the day. Since we didn't really have anywhere in particular to go, we wandered around for a while, and eventually ended up on Canal Street, ... read more

Thursday Word of the Day: FINISHED!!!!! We are finished with our brick patio!! No minute today was wasted as we raced to finish the patio before the end of our final work day. The morning was a little chilly, but we got to work as soon as we arrived. There were bricks to be laid, bricks to be found and cleaned, and a flower bed to be built. At the far edge of our patio, we used landscaping timber to create a flower bed, so eventually flower and shrubs could be planted to block the view of the parking lot beyond. Zan and Susan became master brick layers while they worked diligently to finish the brick laying and Kelly learned how to run a tamper. Morgan and Asel worked inside the house cleaning windows. We took ... read more

Wednesday March 19th Word of the Day: Precipitation!!! Yes… Precipitation, not snow like we hear home got this week but good old rain. Because of the rain we decided to wait to head out to our job site until after it stopped raining. So after breakfast at 6:00 a.m. we had about an hour and a half of free time. What better to do with free time but sleep! Morgan and Matt helped out in the kitchen cleaning up from breakfast while the rest of us took a nap. We arrive at our work site about 9:00 a.m. ready for work, but unfortunately the rain wasn’t ready to stop. It started raining soon after we got back to work cleaning out the brick pile. While Scott ran to go order some wood to finish the end ... read more

Day 1: Monday : Word of the Day: Dirt Our first workday started when the lights in our sleeping rooms came on at 6:00 am. After the initial shock of the early hour, we went to breakfast (Biscuits and Gravy plus scrambled eggs) and got prepared for our day. We then drove to our worksite in Biloxi. The quickest way to get from Ocean Springs to Biloxi is across a bridge that was rebuilt after the hurricane. The bridge has a great view that we have yet to become tired of. The house we are working at is just a few blocks from the main coast and the casinos in Biloxi. After a brief tour of the building, we got our assignments and started working.
