Today we began our trip back towards New Orleans. We left Pensacola and headed along the Gulf Highway through Perdido Key and Orange Beach. No pictures because area was similar to yesterday except even more high rise condo buildings. The area is basically a long Island which parallels the mainland shore. Definitely a tourist and vacation area with lots of vacation rentals, surf shops and restaurants. We then head north and west through Foley and Magnolia Springs to Fairhope which is a picturesque town. Along the way we stopped in to a pecan processing facility, a cute little coffee shop and a restaurant known for throwing rolls. Apparently the practice is that if a customer is waiting for his meal and is hungry the waiters will throw a roll at the customer. In Fairhope several years ago under the direction of the mayor of the town they started a beautification program and the area is now a tourist destination as well as an area of very nice homes. One of the notables of the area was Craig Sheldon who was a master wood sculptor. He also constructed 2 castle like residences. www.fairhopecastle.com Our travels today began in Florida, continued through Alabama and we are now in Ocean Springs Mississippi. We arrived later in the day so have not toured the area yet. We had dinner at Aunt Jenny's Catfish restaurant. An All You Can Eat order of gulf shrimp with all the trimmin's is $13.95. We stayed with the large order which was difficult to finish anyway. The specialties included shrimp, catfish and southern fried chicken. www.coastseefood.com
