It has nearly been 10 months since I made the decision to leave the corporate world behind in pursuit of an adventure. And now I find myself 1 day away from departure, sitting in my parent’s house with all of my personal belongs trying to figure out how one packs for an entire year. Over these last several months I have slowly been preparing myself for what is coming next - life as an English teacher in the Chongqing, China. I have been reading as much as possible about life in China, trying to pick up small bits of the Chinese I left back in college, and saying goodbye to friends and family. I hope to share with you my experiences, the people I meet along the way, and my perspective of living on the other ... read more

As you know Barb and I are about to take what I can only imagine will be a FABULOUS trip to Italy. I wanted to get a start on using this blog for the first time while I'm still in the States. Stay tuned for more interesting news and updates of our trip. Oh yeah, Dave will be joining me later on the trip after Barb leaves.... read more

I arrived at my final destination around nine-thirty in the evening - tired, thirsty, and hot. Over the previous twenty-four hours I had made my way from Minneapolis, to Chicago, through Beijing, and finally into the sweltering third furnace of China: Chongqing. During those three flights and two layovers I sat next to a frightened Somalian on his first flight back to medical school, a boorish young high school student who snored all the way to Beijing, saw the glistening blue and white landscape of the Arctic Ocean, the expansive tundra that is Siberia, the winding rivers through Mongolia, and the bright blue roofs of Beijing factories. The only thing I wanted more than water at the moment of my arrival was sleep. Sheila was there waiting for me at the gate with a large white ... read more

It's just a few more days until I leave. Nine months is suddenly looking less like "almost a year" and more like hundreds and hundreds of days, thousands of hours, and dozens of friends, mistakes and miscommunications, Spanish term papers, and beautiful sights. I can't quite figure out if I'm so nervous I can't cope, or I merely haven't quite realized what I'm doing yet. I am protected (mostly) from measles, mumps, malaria, and any one of yellow, typhoid, or dengue fever. I've got my permethrin and my teflon pants. I've got photos and a journal from a good friend. And yet, I can't help feeling I'm missing something important. I guess I'll find out what soon.... read more

Day 4 - Obfuscator writes: Perhaps it’s just the museums we saw today. Perhaps Minnesota museums are just built for, well, children. Or perhaps all museums are getting this way, and I just haven’t been in enough of them recently. We first went to the Mill City Museum, built in the old General Mills (Washburn A, I think) mill in Minneapolis by the River. Well, to be sure, that wasn’t our first stop. First we (today “we” includes male cousin, D, who graciously took off work and showed us around) went to the new Guthrie Theater, which boasts the longest unsupported structure in the world. Slightly reminiscent of the House on the Rock‘s Infinity Room, but so much less impressive. The Infinity Room gives the impression of a glass needle, while the Endless Bridge seems almost ... read more

posted by Onaxthiel: Hanging out with the cousins in the Twin Cities is fun. Unfortunately, they both have to go to work today, so Obfuscator and I have to find interesting things on our own this morning. ;) Discussed must see sights with our male cousin last night. He recommended Fort Snelling as the morning site, and a number of options for the afternoon spot. We decided on the Saint Paul Cathedral. Snelling was an interesting spot. Lovely views on two sides, at the confluence of the Mississippi and the Minnesota river. The fort has an antique orientation film you can watch before you enter. It has one of the forts founders walking the battlements and talking about “back in his day.” I thought it would have been more entertaining to have him simply reawaken in ... read more

07Jul07 Rode to Jamie and Toni's place in Bloomington (suburb of Minneapolis). I had met Jamie earlier on this trip in South Utah. 08July07 Jamie & I went for a short run through the lake side trails beside their house. Mericfully the run ended and we ran back into the comforts of an air conditioned house. We checked out the new store Grear West, where I took the time to be fitted for new X-country equipment. Yes, I'm having the skis shipped back instead of strapping them on my bike! I was introduced to Reed (friends of Jamie & Toni) who use to live in New York. Reed also rides a motorbike and was a wealth of information on places to ride and see through the tri-state area. ... read more

Day 3 -Departed 6AM CST Kickapoo is a very popular name through Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Corn is also very popular. Corny jokes in Illinois Benj’s truck still likes to run in 2nd. Mike and Mandie have whiplash. After listening to the same XM station (we really like it), and hearing the same commercials over and over again, you tend to hear them a little differently… Betty White will forever be known as the crazy old lady from Lake Placid, not the Pet Meds Plus spokesperson. There's this guy who makes a crap load of money every night before he goes to bed. By our calculations, he's gone to bed 35 times in the past 3 days. Dubuque is a really nice town. It reminded us of Wheeling…except it’s all bunched together and actually looks ... read more

IKEA Run!Betsy K. Our mission: to finish our home decorating. Our test: to see if my long-term illness could withstand a mini-roadtrip, to make sure that I'd be ready for Paraguay. We managed fairly well on both counts when we drove the 500 miles each way to IKEA Minneapolis (at a 7 hour drive each way, the closest IKEA to Lawrence, KS). Yes, I did jokingly sing a reinterpreted version of the "500 Miles" song (by The Proclaimers) with lyrics about Sweden and particleboard. Good times, good times. We also played the License Plate Game both ways, as we went straight up I-35 through Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. We got only 23 states this time. Really, there's not a lot to tell about this short trip, dear reader. We drove 7.5 hours, went to IKEA ... read more
