I was supposed to be in the Philippines today. Or at least, flying over the Arctic circle on my way to the Philippines, via Tokyo. But instead, my plane in Boston was delayed by mechanical problems and weather, and I was stranded in Minneapolis. Better here than NWA's other hub - Detroit. NWA provided lodging at the Days Inn in Bloomington and a few meal vouchers. I had 24 hours to kill until the next flight to Manila. It wasn't long before I learned that a very famous place was right here in Bloomington - the Mall of America. America is really the mother of malls. I do think they must have been invented here first, and they are particularly popular in colder areas of the country where outdoor marketplaces never really worked. Now, I know ... read more

With just a few weeks to go, moving is now a reality that can’t be ignored or dodged. Yesterday, we organized our container, which will be filled with our belongings and shipped off to the United Arab Emirates. According to the customs information, prohibited items include alcoholic beverages and anything of Israeli origin. Religious material needs prior approval from the Ministry. Since a large part of our shipment will be made up of the Toddler’s toys, books and his Thomas the Tank Engine table, I’m pretty confident that our container won’t raise any suspicions at customs (though they may think that we’re going to flood the market with matchbox cars). Our house is also being shown to potential renters - a process that here in America involves keeping your house immaculate (a big joke with a ... read more

I do find myself wondering, as I prepare to leave, how this journey will affect my relationships with people back here. Who will keep in touch, who will drop out of my life forever, who will become an even better friend? How many of those who drift away are people I always thought would be with me till old age? Will my heart ache, will I have regrets? Or will I feel like I have a fresh, clean slate, and starting new? Will I be less stressed that certain people are out of my life (I love them all, but don't we all have friends we love but drain us?) Will I be the one to drift away or drop people from my life?? How will this affect my values? How will this change what I ... read more

The Toddler’s social calendar is busier than mine. Much busier, in fact. While I’m rather pleased these days to get to the supermarket unaccompanied, the Toddler has gym membership, a wide circle of friends he sees regularly and a chauffeur to ferry him to music class, the zoo, library and children’s museum. Organizing his diary - and getting him to all these activities wearing clothes, clean and on time - is no small feat. Excellent time-management skills, the negotiating skills of a presidential candidate and the strength of an ox are required. Loading the car with all his paraphernalia - his sippy cup, snack, back-up snack, the dreaded coat, mittens and hat, diaper bag and spare, back-up snack - is my first test. Forget any one of these items and the whole outing is doomed (admittedly, ... read more

So I'm finally in the process of getting things started now that the holiday rush has died down. I made my appt for my Hepatitis A shot after scouring the CDC website to try and figure out how many rounds there are, how long I have to wait, etc. I have never been so frustrated! You would think that this sort of information would be easy to find, if not there then elsewhere. Nope. Nada. When I checked in for my appt, the nurse asked me which round I was there for. "Round?" I find out that there are 2 (versus 3 for Hepatitis B). And they need to be done 6 months apart. So had I waited or made any decisions later than today, I would be SOL to get my second round before I ... read more

Today it’s so cold it hurts. The temperature has plummeted to minus 25 degrees, making going outdoors - even walking from the car to the supermarket - feel like an Arctic expedition. The bitter air whips right through you, permeating every single bone and even taking your breath away. At its coldest, this weather means that if you threw a cup of water in the air, it would freeze by the time it hit the ground. Yet at the same time, it’s like living in a winter wonderland - blue skies without a cloud in sight, snow-laden scenery and frozen lakes dotted with ice fishing huts and the odd car - yes, the lakes are so frozen solid that you can even drive on them. The deep freeze means layers are essential - but trying telling ... read more
