We entered the Upper Peninsula driving over Mackinac Bridge, an exciting experience. In Saint Ignace, we climbed 170 steps up Castle Rock which afforded a beautiful overlook view of the area. The local Ojibwa Museum gave us great insight into early Indian culture. Of course, Mackinac Island was a highlight, especially Fort Mackinac, Arch Rock and the Grand Hotel. We paid to walk inside the hotel. Mike posed on the front veranda in homage to one of his favorite movies, Somewhere in Time, which was filmed there.... read more

Today we headed east towards Michigan. We decided to stay close to Lake Superior for as long as possible. We found this lake to be very tranquil and beautiful. Theo had wanted a Lake Superior agate and could not find one. We stopped at a visitor center in Marquette, MI and the person manning the desk gave Theo an agate and told us to go right outside to lake and check there. Of course we headed out and found a whole lot of agates, which we loaded up and are bringing home. Our next stop was St. Ignance. This town is where you stay to ferry out to Mackinac Island. On the island there are no motorized vehicles allowed. I went many years ago with my parent’s right after I was married. It was a beautiful ... read more

How else do you get to see how they work, understand how the people there operate, start to appreciate the sometimes subtle differences in culture that may be most apparent where big mobs of people congregate? And it is not necessarily an appropriate performance measure to be able to list those you have successfully skirted. I guess, though, if you are going to visit cities then they might as well be the good ones. Chicago seems to meet that criterion. Walking along a track in Glacier National Park there were a couple of men behind us talking about the Tour de France. They mentioned that Cadell Evans had done exceptionally well and ... read more

So today I had to break down and clean house. YUK! We have been playing around for more than a month and so I thought it was time for a deep cleaning. Yesterday we went to Mackinaw Island. I really wasn't sure what to expect. Was it an old boring Fort or just a tourist trap of shops. Well, it really is a little of both but it is such a quaint and charming place that you can't help but be fascinated by it. You take a short 20 min. ferry ride (from the St. Ignace side) over to the island and it takes you back in time. There are no motorized vehicles on the island at all as you will witness from the pictures. You can rent bikes or you can take one of the ... read more
