Hi Friends and Family,
Dave and I are heading out again. This time we are driving to Alaska, leaving Raynham on May 16. We are really excited about our 2-month trip to the "Last Frontier". We will be driving through Buffalo, Chicago and on up into North Dakota before crossing into Canada. We are leaving the fifth-wheel at home and taking the van once again. For this trip though, we have bought a tent that attaches to the back of the van and becomes part of it. Instead of sitting in the van at night to watch movies, we will be in our spacious 10X10 tent.
We will travel out the northern route through Regina, Edmonton, Dawson Creek, Watson Lake, Dawson City and hopefully through "Top of the World Highway" and into Chicken, Alaska. We need to check the road conditions to make sure the road is open. We intend to head up through Fairbanks and visit the Arctic Circle. Most of the time we are in Alaska, but especially near the Arctic Circle, it will be daylight more than 21 hours a day. We are bringing sleep masks to block out the light at night so we can sleep.
On the "top" of our list of places to see is Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley, the highest point in North America. I'm hoping to get a clear day to snap a picture of the whole mountain. Our next stops will be Talkeetna, Anchorage and then onto Kenai, Homer, Seward and Whittier. The Kenai Fjords are on our list, as is Wrangell/St. Elias NP. As we travel east we will go to Glenallen and down into Valdez.
We plan to take the Alaska Highway down from Tok and then cross back into the Yukon in Canada and go to Haines Junction, Whitehorse, Carcross and into Skagway. I know lots of people in Skagway and am looking forward to seeing them. We will then leave Skagway by ferry on June 23 and visit towns along the Inside Passge that you can only get to by boat or plane. We will depart the ferry and tour and camp at each stop along the way for several days. Our first stop is in Juneau, then Sitka, followed by Ketchikan. The cruise from Sitka to Ketchikan takes 24 hours so we have taken a cabin aboard the ship to sleep in at night. After Ketchikan we board the ferry one last time and arrive in Prince Rupert on July 1. From there we will drive towards home.
On the way home, we will travel along the Yellowhead Highway through Canada and go through Prince George, Jasper, Lake Louise, Baniff NP, Calgary and Waterton Lakes NP. From there we will cross the border back into the US and take Route 2 home from Montana into Michigan. We plan on being home around July 12.
We are really excited about this trip and hope you will enjoy being a part of it. If you subscribe to our blog, you will be notified when we make a new entry. Because we will be traveling out of our Verizon Network, we will have to depend on Hot Spots and Wi-Fi at campgrounds to publish our entries. I hope to get a lot of good shots of wildlife, glaciers, mountains and sea to share with you all.
