Wow, I wanted a travelblog for my upcoming summer adventure, but I am not doing anything half as exciting as the folks on this place are doing. But, since this isn't high school, I'm sure nobody will mind and it's only for the family and friends anyway. The Amtrak tickets have arrived -- BOS to SAC (Boston, MA to Sacramento, CA). The luggage is here and I bought a new camera to document the trip. Post is a fabulous picture of mud season in Maine. I still need to reserve a rental car and try to do a calendar. I hope to post some pre-trip updates so I can get used to this site and be ready to use it on the road... read more

Tuesday 22nd January - Sunday 27th January 2008 This is more of a photo session as I have just eaten a steakbomb sub, which has a week’s worth of MEAT in it and am feeling a little lethargic and thus cannot be bothered to summarize what has happened in too much detail. I apologize for my laziness and the very dull approach to my last few blogs, but you know how I feel about winter and creative motivation. On Tuesday I made a big Bangers and Mash dinner for Laura and we drank a bottle of champagne for absolutely no reason. I am not a fan and it changed my mood significantly putting a bit of a dampener on an otherwise great evening, taking my mind off the insulating work that would take up the entire ... read more

Hi, my name is Beast. I am a 1996 Dodge Caravan currently just shy of 165,000 miles. The stories to come are about my journies and adventures with Kaitlyn, my human. Here is a little more about myself. To Kaitlyn I am her "car", her yacht, her home. I may no longer function as the standard minivan, hauling the kids from place to place. Although there was the time for that too, I have been in Kaitlyn's family since 1998! Kaitlyn and I devised a plan for life of the road. First thing to go was the seats, then Kaitlyn built a sleeping system in back and was able to store all her gear below. And the bed is a pull out with the option for two people. The roof rack can carry six sea kayaks ... read more

Hey everyone! Welcome to our travel blog. In nine days, we'll fly from Boston to Cairo via Frankfurt and begin a four-and-a-half month sojourn during which we'll study at the American University in Cairo and get to know the Middle East and North Africa a little better. A lot of people have expressed concern over our safety while abroad, but rest assured that, despite our goofy hijinx, we are mature, responsible guys when we need to be. I'd worry more about the two of us killing each other, but hopefully that won't happen either. Anyway, we'll keep this site updated as to our studies and adventures and the like. Please feel free to contact us. We'd love to hear from you all. And here is a picture of the two of us on a previous trip ... read more

Dear Friends & Family, What a joy it was to see 3 of the Svihuses step out of the elevator! The only joy that was missing was seeing Dylan, but football playoffs must come first when the team is counting on you, Mr. Snap. CHS will play Scotts Valley on Saturday next...good luck! We spent so much time getting caught up on things. It sounds like all is well at home. Jenn has planned Thanksgiving and I gave her "The Recipe" for creamed onions. We will missed being with the whole family, but are delighted to be here with Abby where it was the coldest spot in the continental USA yesterday at 13 degrees! I guess our long undies will be most needed. We went up the Maine coast (again for us) to see sailboats in ... read more

Dear Readers, This will be our last night camping in Maine. Tomorrow we'll leave for Portland where we shall meet up with the 3 J's of the Svihus Family. Naturally we are excited to see them live and in person. I think I can safely say we are also excited about staying in a hotel for 3 nights: more warmth, more room in the bed, more hot showers, more restaurant food, more conversation, more sites to see, more boats to look at... This Colonial Mast campground has been very nice and the family who runs it are very helpful. We are the only motorhome on promitory (spell check doesn't like that one), so you know what I mean...a point of land that juts out into Long Lake (which it is!). There are 5 campsites out here ... read more

Dear Family & Friends in Warmer Places, There is frost on the pumpkin and ice on the rain puddles. We were camped in Brookline, NH for 3 nights which was very nice & on a pond and beyond, a lake. We explored many old towns like Merrimac, Amherst, Nashua, etc. which all were founded 1680, 1730, 1803 etc. Being a native CA gal; that's old. We have really loved NH and were delighted to be back Do you know what the road sign says when you are coming into a populated area? "THICKLY SETTLED" It reminds me of some of those quaint phrases in England "LOOSE CHIPPINGS". They had to turn off the water to the campground here, too, but we can still take a hot shower. Clear days with a high 48, low 26...burrrr. We ... read more

Obfuscator writes: Having been up pretty late the night before with uploading material and laundry, we awoke fairly late in Bar Harbor. Our plan for the day was to explore Acadia National Park, the second smallest National Park in the service, at least according to our 1989 National Geographic Guide Book (which was perhaps the greatest 50¢ investment ever). We stopped first at the Visitor's Center to see if there was anything we could possibly need to know, and it turned out that there wasn't. Camping was only available in one of the campgrounds, but they didn't anticipate we'd have any trouble finding a spot, since twenty had been available the night before, and this was a Sunday. The weather couldn't have been better for viewing a National Park. It was sunny and very clear. It ... read more

Obfuscator writes: Lying theft aside, the Motel 6 in Portland was a pleasant enough place to sleep. So, you know, feel free to stay there for a night, and just make sure you chop off the hands of the useless front desk foreigners as compensation for their theft. We were happy to have spent the night indoors, as a quick glance out the window in the morning showed us that there had been significant rain overnight. The forecast I was able to get from a pirated WiFi connection predicted rain all day and through the night. We decided that with weather that poor, we weren't going to be able to enjoy much outdoors, so we figured we'd check Portland out a bit more thoroughly before we left it. The downtown in Portland has a big statue ... read more
