I am so happy to report that our first night with a party of six went great ! Everyone slept well and they even woke up in a good mood. It’s seems as though they must have brought some of that good ole’ Georgia sunshine with them up here to Maine. When we got up this morning those golden rays were just a shinin’ through the windows and we couldn’t be more happy ! After a week of really crappy weather, it finally looked like we were going to be able to get out and do some stuff without having to worry about getting all wet. Luckily, Tim, Jon and I survived the first week without catching pneumonia and now at least Jon was going to have a couple of nice days to enjoy. We gathered ... read more

Well heck, you would think by now we would be getting used to all this crazy cold New England weather but when you wake up on July 2nd and it’s so cold you can see your breathe, that’s just insane !! We decided last night that we were going to sleep in this morning so we didn’t even set the alarm on Tim’s phone. Somewhere around 11:00 am we rolled on out of bed to another rainy day. The thermometer on the window said it was 53 degrees and I believe it ! We actually had to cut the heat on for a bit because as we were talking we could see our breathe in the air ! I really needed to make a trip inside and re-stock on a few things before the rest of ... read more

Day 7 - Portland Maine Today we explored Portland Maine. The first thing we discovered was that the visitors map of Portland (that is practically everywhere) had an error on it. The visitor’s center was moved from the destination given on the map to an area near the train museum at the other side of the harbor. We did a lot of walking to find it. But we found it and did get some information. We visited the Observatory, which was very interesting. It’s amazing that it has survived all these years, through fires and bad storms, but it has endured them all. The Observatory isn’t even secured into the ground as it held down by ballast (giant granite bolders). Once the 2-way radio communication came into being the observatory wasn’t really needed anymore. The shore ... read more

June 24, 2009 We decided to go back to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory today since it wasn’t open when we went by there on Sunday (on our way to Bar Harbor). Luckily for us it was open today so we got to go up to the observatory. It was fantastic. This type of bridge with an observatory is the only one on the American Continent (North and South). There are only three bridges of this kind in the world. The other two are in Thailand and Slovakia. The total length of the bridge is 2,120 feet and the weight is 126 million pounds. After leaving there we went to Stockton Springs - this was an impromptu stop because we saw a lighthouse sign and wanted to investigate. It was fun trying to find it - along ... read more

At 5:30Am I woke up and took the 8:00AM plane to Newark, NJ than another to Boston, Massachusetts. My first impression of Boston was that everything was so modern and artistic, the "Logan" airport is probably the biggest I've seed yet. So far I'm already two days into the assembly, It's been interesting, I finally manage to make some friends, one of them managed to start a conversation with me by saying I looked like a lost circus girl sitting on the trunks while I was waiting for my mother's friend's husband to get the car from a hardcore parking lot traffic jam. He says (his name is David by the way) that he was gonna try to look for me tomorrow, oh well at least I won't be bored. The buildings here in Portland are ... read more

Hey all, sorry its been a while, seem to have been busy, and its pretty difficult to get online sometimes! We finished up in New York last week and then moved onto Niagara Falls for a couple of days, stayed at a hostel that seemed more like someones house. The lady that owned it was lovely though, really helpful. Niagara Falls is beautiful, just like nothing iv ever seen before, it really is cold this farnorth though, went for a walk on the evening that we got into Niagara, never been so cold, am told that it was about minus 10C, braved it for a couple of hours anyway. Was so strange to see a river like Niagara frozen over (ice about 6ft thick in places!). Went to supermarket and bought a microwavable Calzone, our landlady ... read more

Dear Friends & Family, What a joy it was to see 3 of the Svihuses step out of the elevator! The only joy that was missing was seeing Dylan, but football playoffs must come first when the team is counting on you, Mr. Snap. CHS will play Scotts Valley on Saturday next...good luck! We spent so much time getting caught up on things. It sounds like all is well at home. Jenn has planned Thanksgiving and I gave her "The Recipe" for creamed onions. We will missed being with the whole family, but are delighted to be here with Abby where it was the coldest spot in the continental USA yesterday at 13 degrees! I guess our long undies will be most needed. We went up the Maine coast (again for us) to see sailboats in ... read more

Obfuscator writes: The morning came to us in Franconia Notch State Park with little fanfare. Being wedged between two mountains as we were, there was no real dawn per se, just fairly sudden light. The notch really is just an elongated pass between the two, and there's not much there, other than an elongated State Park and the highway that runs down the middle. Because it's so narrow, most of the State Park is actually made up of separate exits on this highway, and since it's a divided highway, they're only accessible going one direction. This means that to get to some of them, you have to drive up to others, exit, turn around, and get back on the highway. The first thing we wanted to see on our way out of the park was the ... read more
