Day 2 began with an 8:00 breakfast meet up. Embassy Suites offered breakfast buffet everyday. So after everyone's allotted 30 minute morning time was completed, we headed downstairs to begin our day. The breakfast set up was very good. There was scambled eggs, home fries, sausage, bacon, french toast, fresh waffles and made to order omelets. All very good... all eaten = too full yet again.
After breakfast, we headed out to Freeport. Freeport, ME was about 30 minutes away from Portland and was where the flagship LL Bean store was at; it's opened 24 hours and it had the big LL Bean boot in front. It was also the place where there were more outlets.... Yay for more outlets. We hit the LL Bean outlet, AF, North Face, Patagonia, and J. J. Coombes. Because we were going to have an early dinner, we have a light lunch at the little cafe in LL Bean. I had a salad, Betsy had 1/2 a sandwich, Mary and Aunt Sue split chicken chili and a salad. We were off.
We finally made it to Cape Elizabeth and the lighthouse. We thought this lighthouse was the most photographed lighthouse, but it was
just the strongest. It was built in 1874 and flashes every 15 seconds... although I don't think I paid any attention to the flashes, so I can't confirm that it did every 15 seconds. We walked along the rocks a bit (NOT very dangerous at all) and took a couple of group shots. Then we walked around the cliffs a little and came across the Lobster Shack. It was very busy... but not budget friendly, scenery was excellent though. You ate outside and had the nice view of the Casco Bay. BUT we weren't quite hungry yet and had another light house to get to, so we didn't eat here.
From Cape Elizabeth, we ventured over to the Portland Head Light. This was the light house that we just missed on saturday. We found a place to park by Fort Williams park and walked along the hiking path. Mary and I ventured down into the rocks and found the light house. We decided that this was the most photographed lighthouse ever and not Cape Elizabeth as previously though. Plus Mary and I must have added at least another 50 shots to the "most photographed" count. Photography 101 lesson #2
- shoot from different angles can get different results. Don't always shoot from straight up. sometimes shooting from below can give you the same "shot" but a different viewpoint because of your angle. OK, lesson learned...
While walking thru the park, we needed to have a bathroom break. We stopped the guard to ask and he immediately knew what we were going to ask... apparantly he gets asked that question a lot... he said, walk thru the two handicapped signs and bear right... you can't miss it. We found it, but wished we could miss it. They were a series of porta potties. One lady was walking out of one and said it was nasty, I opened a door and saw a fly and decided... didn't need to go after all.... Everyone decided, they could hold it. So we headed back to the hotel, which thankfully was only about 10 minutes away.
We rested a little at the hotel and headed down to the lobby for Happy Hour. They had veggies and dip, chips, crackers, and trail mixes. O they had free drinks. We tried a little bit of everything and it was all very good. BUT the
interesting thing about this HH was that there was this "greedy" lady, who was reaching from behind the table to grab her snacks and she kept getting the trailmix and putting them in her bag. We think at the end of it all, she probably had a full bags worth of party mix. Very greedy in deedy.
Dinner that night was at Gilbert's Chowder House off of Commercial Street in downtown Portland by the wharf. Mary and I each had a 1 pound lobster, Betsy had the lobster roll and Aunt Sue had the fried scallops. We each had chowder of sorts... decent meal. Very casual atmosphere, along the wharf and budget friendly. Mary made me put on the bib, but she also taught me how to eat lobster. I guess it was worth wearing the bib!
Dinner finished... just in time for the 2nd half of The Amazing Race. 17-17-17-18
