So the morning started with an early morning (by Sherry standards) start. Mary, Aunt Sue and I headed off to BWI to catch a 9:20 flight to Manchester, NH. I ran about 5 minutes behind and we needed to make a pit-stop at my Aunt's house, so that meant that Betsy had about 30 minutes of Betsy time before we all met up. It was about an hour flight from BWI to Manchester. So we got to Manchester about 10:30ish. We got our rental car and we were off. We decided to take the more scenic more coastal road to Portland. So Mary took us along Route 1, but before we made it to Route 1, we saw Kittery Outlets and we had to stop. Who could refuse??? Kittery was in the town of York and had about 120 stores. It reminded me of Lancaster, where all the shops were in "strip malls" versus shopping centers. You had to walk/drive to the various shopping strips. After we finished shopped it was around lunch time, so we stopped at Bos'n Landing. We each had a fried seafood basket for lunch. I had the clam strips and everyone else has the fried haddock.
All with fries and cole slaw... all fries eaten up.... probably by me... I can't help it when it comes to fries, but I sure was regretting it when it was all said and done.
After lunch, we headed off on Route one and came across this quaint little beach town called Ogunquit. Ogunquit is one of Maine’s most-visited resort towns and the beach was sandy and wide. Nothing compared to the beaches we have at home. It looked like the span of the beach was about a 1/4 of a mile wide from the ocean to the shore. It was that spansive. There were lots of people just sun bathing and some in the water. I stuck my toe in it and it was cold, so I don't know how these folks could be submerged in it. I'd be freezing. From Ogunquit, we arrived at Kennebunkport and so begins our foodie tour (sort of) or Maine. While walking thru the town, we happened across The Clam Shack and noticed that it was part of Food Wars on Travel channel. As part of the Lobster Roll challenge with fellow Kennebunkport restuarant Allison's, the Clam Shack came out the victor.
Kennebunkport
1st Lighthouse sighting Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to try it, but the episode appears on the Travel Channel on Saturday, 10-15 at 3:30. Could be worth DVRing. After walking around town a little bit, we decided to be the tourist and look for Walker's Point (Bush's compound). We found it with ease and I swear we saw George getting into his golf cart, but Mary didn't believe me. I'd also like to tell you that this was where my Photography 101 lessons began. There was perfect lighting that afternoon and Mary wanted to get a shot or two of her and Walker's Point... I took one shot... not good... angle it with the bush being the center... I took another shot... put Mary closer to the lower left... then I took another... OK... good enough... Lesson learned.... Find a focal point and make sure you get the full scenery (water, sky, rocks, Walker's Point, etc...)
From Walker's Point, we made it to Cape Elizabeth. There was a light house there that was supposed to be the most photographed lighthouse ever. We never made it to that lighthouse but we did happen across the Portland Head Light, which had just closed...
Walker's Point
Can you see the compound in the back? Fail.... Oh well, tomorrow it shall be.
From the Portland Head Light we headed to our hotel, with a pitstop for dinner at Newick's Lobster House. Aunt Sue and I had the broiled seafood combo, Betsy had some sort of combination seafood newburg bake and Mary has the clam steamers.... All fairly good, but yet again... very filling... Mary's steamers were a little gross too because you had to peel the black part off of the tail and who knows what that really is... :O) After dinner, we stopped by Hannafords to pick up some water and steal some grapes. Then off to Jetport Blvd Embassy Suites to call it a night.
