We leave for new york. There are a few buses leaving at various times but i think we are going to take the one at 6:15. It's a 17 hour ride so we will arrive in new york city on sunday around noon. We are staying with mischa's dad for a few days in the east village and then taking a bus to cooperstown. We are thinking we will do that on wednesday. Soo.... as soon as I find an opportunity to use a computer I will let all know what is going on. Goodbye!... read more

Mischa is now going with me to the farm in new york. The man who owns it wasn't sure how he felt about the both of us coming for a visit but after talking to both of us on the phone he seems to be ok with it. As of now we are aiming to leave by this weekend. I can't even be excited about it because every time we think we have everything done then it turns out we have 5 more things to do or wait on. So that's the plan for now and if it changes again I won't be disappointed as I will again be prepared. I am exhausted.... It has been two weeks to the day since mischa's mom passed away and I can't figure out where the days went. ... read more

I am glad to be almost home eventhough the trip has been great. I wish we had had better internet services so I could have kept you all up to date. We have driven a lot the last two days. I’m ending the trip on a very nice relaxing note. Saturday was a very calm and easy day of driving. I drove through downtown Indianapolis on I-65 and it was a breeze. Such a pleasant and enjoyable change from the hassles and frustrations of Friday in Chicago! I arrived in Berea, KY (about 30 miles south of Lexington, KY) just after 3 pm as I had planned. I set up the RV, fired up the AC for Chessy, unhooked Ike and went exploring. Berea is a wonderful area and a place you should put on your list to visit when you are in this part of the country. It is the Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of Kentucky. Many artisans have studios here and you can watch them work. The campus of Berea College is beautiful. ... read more

So today is the first day this week I have had a chance to relax... being that all week even though I have not had a job I have had tons of errands to run in preparation for my travels. Packing for this trip was much different than any packing I have done before. Usually it takes me approximately 10 minutes to throw everything I need into some sort of bag but as I will be gone for a couple of months for this trip I spent a good two hours or so trying to figure out what I didn't really need to bring with me. My biggest mistake was to try and pack 8 books which I managed to cut down to 4 or 5. But everything is packed and all my errands have been ... read more

When we first starting telling people about our trip—our journey across the country, a summer of freedom without menial jobs, rent payments and utility bills—their first reactions confused us. It wasn’t “Oh how great!” or “Sounds exciting!.” No, instead it was something much more basic. “What type of car are you driving?” I suspect they were looking for an answer a little more rugged than what I had to offer, probably some sort of gas-guzzling SUV or camper. So when I said, “my Neon” lets just say that no one thought we could do it. Apparently, fuel-efficient vehicles aren’t supposed to be used for cross-country trips, but with gas topping $3.50 a gallon, we’re already going to be overbudget. I can’t imagine a trip of this scale taking place in a vehicle that requires a $20 ... read more

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Well everybody, I guess that technically today is the big day. Today is the day that I leave the protection/confines of home and head out looking for the danger/adventure of the great Out There. My truck is packed and there's really no reason for me to be awake right now (5 short hours before I'm planning on leaving) except that I'm incredibly excited and ready to go. Tomorrow (technically today) is going to be a tough day driving. I am planning on attempting to go all the way to a National Monument in NE New Mexico from Louisville KY (I forget the name of that monument, but I have it circled on a map. ... read more

One of the great joys of travelling to new places is foregoing all the convenience and vices of internet, television, and telephone and exploring the unknown. One of the great barriers to boredom when relaxing in familiar places is doing without all those vices without having the unknown the explore. While we would have never expected this to be one of our pursuits this summer, we soon became very engaged in birding and informally began to recreate Audubons Guide to Birds of Central and Southern Kentucky (and if that's not a current title of a book, we'll have enough photos to publish one soon). The red-winged black bird can be rare throughout the state, but is quite common in the marshy wetland areas of Western Kentucky or (in our case) in the reeds along side murky ... read more
