Today is our last day before our trip to South Africa begins. Actually, by this time tomorrow, we'll already be on our way to Minneapolis! Mom will leave Lincoln a few minutes before I leave Waterloo. We will meet in Minneapolis and travel the rest of the way (through Atlanta and Johannesburg) together. Think happy weather thoughts, please!!! Clothing is all sorted out; tickets and documents are in hand; itinerary is mapped out; car, phone, and accommodations have been booked. The only thing left is the actual packing of our single (each) carry-on bags and tying up of loose ends. We are traveling light, the only way to go. So a busy-ish day lies ahead for each of us, then we'll be ready for a good, early, restful night of sleep! ... read more

Hello Everyone! I'm back in Iowa safe and sound from my trip to Colorado. It was a great week with Francisco, what a beautiful state it is.....(Can't wait to see the mountains of southern chile now!) The hours are slowly winding down for me to fly! It's midnight, and I leave for the Cedar Rapids airport at 3am. My lovely mother and Aunt Darla are the lucky crazy ladies who are going to give me a ride bright and early. I fly to atlanta, to lima peru, to tacna, then bus to arica. It will be a long 26 hours of traveling/layovers....but so worth it :) Just a little update, last week I learned the hard reality of foreign taxes. My art supplies arrived safely in my host family's house, but they were charged an additional ... read more

We spent the morning and early afternoon in Chicago being real tourists. We started off on the L and then went straight to Buckingham Fountain. It's really impressive and reminded me of the grand European capitals because the area was full of large boulevards and lots of green trees and grass. From the fountain we walked up through Grant Park and into Millennium Park. We saw the Bean and the reflection was sooooo cool. We kept walking up the avenues of Chicago through the downtown area. We crossed the Chicago River and were told to look for Giordano's, a great place for Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. It was great...and filling. Then, being the smart ones that we are, we decided to go up to the top of the Hancock Tower. The elevator goes from the lower level ... read more

After a year of anticipating traveling abroad, I leave tomorrow for my study abroad program in Alicante, Spain! I'm excited to learn about Spain, its culture, and its language, but I am also looking forward to traveling Europe in general. My excitement is about equal to my nervousness right now, but I'm trying to avoid thinking about missing family and friends and beginning the semester without knowing anyone. This semester is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I'm ready for new things! My flight leaves tomorrow afternoon from Chicago O'Hare, then lands in Madrid eight hours later before connecting to the airport in Alicante. In less than 24 hours I will be across an ocean in a new country, speaking a new language, and meeting new people!... read more

Yokoso Counselors! My name is Aimee Ladd and I will be your director for Panther Cubs at the American Embassy! I hope you are all excited as I am for the summer ahead! Last year, I was a day camp counselor at the Embassy where I had a fabulous experience working with the children and staff. As well as devoting much of my time and energy to camp, I did my fair share of venturing through Tokyo experiencing and learning about the Japanese culture. Each day was a new experience, from the crammed subway rides to the fried octopus balls there’s always something turning your head. By the end of the summer I had a heart-felt appreciation for the people and their culture. So, please feel free to ask me any questions you have about camp, ... read more
