Chicago is admittedly a rather violent city. The city has a history of violence, going back to the days of Al Capone and his likes. Crime rates and unemployment rates in some parts of the city are (or at least were) insanely high. Given these facts, and being a pretty experienced traveler, I trust nobody. Inspired by the spirit of the moment, in combination with a few beers, I decide to go against my instincts and have a late-night chat with the guys hanging out outside the Lincoln/Belmont YMCA. Although these guys may not be typical losers, they will most likely never make it to any Hall Of Fame. But they won't hurt me. They won't rob me. They even show some polite interest in Europe, although they really don't care. To them I'm probably just ... read more

Soldier Field is a fantastic name for a sports stadium. An ancient tone to it, intimidating for guests, illustrative of the events taking place on the pitch. The construction is equally original with its Greek (or maybe Roman) style. May it never change its name to "Coca Cola field" or "Pepsi Stadium"...It is the venue for the second round of the 1994 World Cup Soccer game Germany-Belgium. Turns out to be a terrific game. I decide to root for the Belgian side, considering my Walloon roots four generations back. Unfortunately Germany goes for the knock-out from the very start. Up 3-1 after the first half. The most efficient duo Völler/Klinsmann sees to that. Germany rarely lose a lead like that. This is no exception. Even though it SHOULD have been a penalty when the Belgian striker ... read more

The Greyhound Bus from Detroit pulls into the Chicago bus station late at night. I'm not sure when, since I don't know if there's a time difference between Michigan and Illinois. I know basically nothing about the city, and I have no place to stay. On top of this, it turns out that my luggage is not on the bus. Late night at a Greyhound terminal downtown Chicago is not exactly the right moment to crack. So, I pull out my sensible thinking, working methodically. Awaiting my luggage is step one. It arrives with the next bus. Finding a place to stay is step two. I call a hotel listed on the ad board, they have a room. The comment from the taxi driver "You don't wanna stay here, man", isn't very encouraging. The room is ... read more

Geo: 41.8842, -87.6324Stayed in burbs with college friend Skin & it was a bit mad getting there, we had his address but no explanation that was not in fact in the city at all (or directions), so we get in taxi at the airport & show the man the address who runs us as we don't know where exactly it is - he was pretty mean actually. We go to information where an 80 year old woman helps us but apparently we are missing the post code or something so it all takes ages & of course we only have the phone number of Skins friend who doesn't know us & Skin won't be home til 5pm! So anyway she figures out what we have to do which involves a slow train to the middle of ... read more
