Some more photos of maui, including the awesome hostel i stayed at in the (not as awesome, but happily non-touristy) town of Wailuku, which is nestled in the Iao River Valley with the Maui Mountains as backdrop. A short hike into the mountains revealed awesome views of cloud-shrouded mountain peaks, a tree canopy covered in flowers, wild strawberry guavas, and some surprisingly prickly underbrush. When pictures can't do justice: At Makena (Big and Little beach), I had one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Playing in the surf, one of they guys I was hanging out with told me to dive under the waves, hold my breath for a bit, and listen. So I dove down maybe three or four feet, eyes squeezed shut, trying furiously not to float back up. It has been ... read more

It was a beautiful morning, 78 degrees and virtually cloudless. We met the Scott's friend, Penny, at a nearby restaurant and headed to "Long Ears" together, a renowned coffee plantation owned by Wendell Branco, in the Honoka'a congregation. About ten years ago, he retired from the Waimea fire department and took up the hobby of growing coffee per a friend's suggestion. He's known for his aged coffee, a noticeably popular choice discovered quite by accident - he stored more coffee than he was selling at the time, and after trying the aged coffee quite some time later, he decided its unique, low-acid flavor would take off. His judgements were correct; his famous aged coffee is now in high demand and is served by the elite restaurants of the islands. His coffee plants surround his humble abode ... read more

Again, i couldn't sleep in this morning, as tired as i was. But somehow i feel well-rested this morning. It's beautiful outside... i hope it stays that way for my last week. I remember what we've done recently but i could not tell you the exact order, so i'll just sketch out a few things... "One day" we went out on a home-school field trip for the kids to the vanilla factory... They get the vanilla from orchids... did i tell u this story already? I'm getting deja vu.. anyway that was fun, Melia and Bryan came too. I have a couple pictures from that too. I'll also put up the wet pants pictures that i promised from Laupahoehoe. I'll try and throw some others in there too from the past couple of weeks. Sorry if ... read more

I am all kinds of tired at the moment so i'll try to shorten this as much as possible... i woke up at 3:00 this morning and called Bryan to see if he was still coming cuz the scott's said he loves to sleep and they really didnt think he was gonna come... so anyway i called him and he answered immediately and said he's in the neighborhood and will be here in 10 seconds. He was so awake and hyper i was like whaaaat... lol but anyway I'll write more later. And i know i keep saying that, but for real i will... i'll just write enough to be able to go into detail later. So now i'll put up a load of pictures and describe them as well as i can. Dave took almost ... read more

Hi there, I have landed in Auckland, NZ, and have just finalised my itinerary for the next two weeks. Hawaii was great. I would love to have spent more time there, but I guess I¡¯ve said that about pretty much all of my destinations. Got to get within inches of some Humpback whales off the island of Maui, an idyllic tropical island. The boat was required to stop 100 yds from the whales, but the female took a shine to the boat and 3-4 males were in hot pursuit. Each of them weighed about 40 tonnes. On the main island, I checked out some active volcanoes. One is 14,000 ft high, and it is a further 16,000 ft deep in the Pacific. A couple of days before I arrived, there was a small earthquake, (4 on ... read more

I just wanted to see if i would get any comments if i didn't update. lol jk... we've been out a lot lately so i haven't been able to update. I'll put pictures up later, but i just wanted to touch bases and assure you all i'm still alive. :) I can't win - i can't tell you how many comments i've gotten putting down my latest pictures... but clearly, i was trying to get you all to appreciate the beauty of blurred art. And my buddy Ray Charles was helping me out... lol sorry i dont know what happened, but i'll try and get them back up and in focus. A couple days ago we went to the beach, named '69' after the lightpole where you turn. Unfortunately i didn't take any pictures, although Dave ... read more

Hana Highway is the most scenic and sickening tour on Maui. It is famous for record numbers of bridges and hairpin curves, made even more fun by sections that are so narrow only one car can drive through at a time. Luckily I wasn't the driver, I had a window seat in a van and could sit back and ... try not to get carsick. Our (excellent) driver/guide from the hostel, Montana, was this awesome burly guy who grew up in Alaska and had tons of great wildery stories to entertain us with when the passing mountains, streams, exotic plants (like flowering trees and glades of rainbow eucalyptus) and towering waterfalls grew mundane (ha!). Essentially the road is just sandwiched between the ocean, pure blue exploding over black volcanic rock in frothy white, and the jungle. ... read more
