January 12-19, 2007 After a lengthy delay in Honolulu, a short island-hopper flight delivered us to Kauai at twilight on Friday, Jan. 12. This smaller island is MUCH less developed. Nearly 2/3 of the island is inaccessible by car, and the jagged, steep mountains with their lush rain forests are unlike anything we have ever seen. We found a hidden-away seafood restaurant before driving to the north side of the island where we had booked a timeshare swap. During our dinner we heard the NOAA radio alarm, announcing the earthquake in Alaska and possible tsunami in Hawaii. That certainly changed the relaxed attitude we had, since we were headed exactly into the northern most tip of all the Hawaiian islands (and in the dark, no less.) Suffice to say, when we heard the warning had been ... read more

Today we ported at Kona, which is the other side of the island we were on yesterday. It was actually the warmest day of the islands we have been to yet. Got up normal time and had our usual buffet lunch. Got off the ship and finally had a look at the shops here. Went to Wal Mart which is like a big Kmart and Coles combined. Then went to Hilo Hattie which is like where you buy all the authentic Hawaiian wear. So you wouldn’t go to Hawaii and not buy a Hawaiian shirt. So we bought one each! Then headed back to the pier which had a beach next to it, so just chilled on the beach for a bit. At 12.30 we had a raft and snorkel cruise booked. So we got on ... read more

Jan. 10 & 11, 2007 and Friday evening, Jan. 19, 2007 We got up early to drive to the Phoenix airport for our flight to Honolulu on Jan. 10. We figured that since we were part way to this exotic part of our country, why not go a bit further! The flight to Hawaii took 6-hours and moved us into yet another time zone (5 from the east coast.) We were welcomed to Oahu by nice warm temps and a lovely blue ocean, but wow! what traffic! During our first 48 hours in Honolulu we visited a terrific Polynesian Cultural Center, rode the public bus nearly all the way around the island, visited the Pearl Harbor memorial, saw great surf, walked in the sands of Waikiki and were amazed at the buzz that surrounds Honolulu. At ... read more

Got off the ship at Hilo and got on our tour bus to go and see the volcano’s. Jumping on the bus felt like we were getting on the senior cits bus for the day. People needed help getting on and off. Neway we were on our way went thru downtown Hilo and to the Volcano National Park. Visited a few volcanoes which were craters. It was amazing. No lava in site but each crater was just steaming. You saw some dry lava, it was like we were on another planet. The tour guide said NASA had trained there astronauts on this surface as it resembles the moon. It was very usual. Apparently the Killawa Volcano is the 2nd most active in the world. It has been active since 1983 and when the ship leaves port ... read more

The ship stayed in port overnight so we got up fairly early had our buffet breakfast as we do every day and got off the ship and into our car. Drove to the north east side of the island this time. We stopped at the Wallua Falls which were flowing very fast (and saw chickens even there!) continue driving to another waterfall. We had to be back on the ship at 12.30 to leave port at 1 and we had a about an hour and a half left. So we continued to travel up north and went to a cliff and lighthouse. Also went past the ‘Sleeping Giant’ mountain- see pic and try and work it out! We then thought about going to see some caves that we further up. But were not sure how long ... read more

We have docked in Kauaii and had a jungle waterfalls kayak tour today. But when we got off the ship and onto the bus, it was cancelled due to the extreme weather. Apparently the river was overflowing. So that put a dampener on our plans. We ended up catching a shuttle to the local shopping center where we bought a few little things. We went to the tour place there and the lady suggested we hire a car for 24 hours (as the sip was staying in port overnight). So that’s what we did. We hired the car and went right around the island. Drove for about an hour and a half to the south west side of the island and stopped at the Waimea Canyon which is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It was ... read more

I arrived to Kona and hooked up with Ǻsa (a former colleuge from the Firm) and her boyfriend James. I tried some Kava (a local intoxicant drink) and local Hawaiian food. Also the size of the vehicles on the Big Island are beyound belief. Saavuin Konaan ja tapapasin vanhan työkaverin Ǻsan ja hänen poikaystävän Jamesin. Kokelin Kaavaa (paikallinen lievästi huumaavaa juoma) ja paikallista Hawaiilaista ruokaa. Paikallisten autojen koko oli aivan uskomatonta (se pikku vihreä auto on Ǻsan).... read more
