Well, it’s the Year of the Pig, or Boar of the Year 4704 for most of the Chinese around the world. This means a month long celebration comparable to Christmas, Thanksgiving and Mardi Gras, rolled into one to the Western World. Time for friends and families to visit with each other, bringing small gifts, serving snacks and foods to guests, with many symbolic meaning behind them, having firecrackers and Lion and Dragon dances on the streets and town squares as well as entertainment of folk dances, martial arts, operas and what not. Like other cities with a fair size of ethnic Chinese, Honolulu Chinatowns are also lively with shops selling Good Luck Objects, special sweets and foods and holding block parties with all types of Vendors and entertainment. The past weekend events was held at the ... read more

Well, I promised pictures, didn't I? Today is my day to sleep in, so I got up around 9, and I've been resizing photos while I wait for someone to get back from running a military errand. Then we go to the mall! YAY! So here we go! Our first stop was the USS Arizona Memorial. We drove over, got our tickets, and had to wait a little over an hour for our tour to begin. So we wandered around and took some pictures. We ended up heading out to the memorial around 10:30. When we got back we took a quick tour of the Bowfin, then took the bus over to Ford Island to see the USS Missouri. We took the bus back to our car, put the top down, then drove back over ... read more

I made it to Hawaii somehow. It all started wednesday morning when I took off from the hostel north of San Francisco. I got the chance to experience some SF traffic and pay 5$ for going south on the Golden Gate Bridge. Then I took 1 South and drove for a couple hours precariously close to the shear rock ciliffs of the Pacific Ocean. It was great until I hit a section that resembled the drive to Snowshoe WV, for those who know what I mean (average speed 15 mph, 180 degree turns) . I actually got a little car sick and some of cliffs started to sneak on me and my lead foot, but it ended up okedokey. I made it to Morrow Bay and the greatest Aunt in the World (Muffy) fed me like ... read more

There are three options for getting to Kalaupapa: 1) fly 2) hike the trail 3) ride a mule down the trail. The hike is... strenuous. 1600 feet. 26 switchbacks. If you do the hike switchback number 18 is reputed to be about halfway. Takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Flying in is a bit of an adventure - note the breaking wave at the end of the runway in the last photo, and yes that is the direction into which the planes normally take off. But the views are spectacular and the town and history are amazing. There is a big sign right at the top of the cliff...$500 fine for unauthorized entry. To go to Kalaupapa you must be part of a tour. Check out this site for more pictures and info: http://www.nps.gov/kala... read more

Not long until our holidays - hurrah. We can't wait and looking forward to the break and getting to see friends and family back home. Paisley won't be quite the same without my Grandpa who sadly passed away two weeks ago. However, we are looking forward to seeing everyone and remembering a very funny and special man - we'll definitely have a wee whisky in his honour. In the meantime it's time to pack and organise. I have four days of flying to get through first. Here are some photos of my recent trips to Maui over in Hawaii. Bye for now and look out for our travel blogs for our time in Europe. Lots of love, Mike and Charlotte xxx... read more

About a year ago, there was an article in the papers announcing that the Pineapple Plantation in Kunia in Central Oahu, would no longer be planting after the present harvest. It seemed to have caught many off guard, especially the 70 employees of that Plantation. It surprised me also, but only for the reason to learn we still did have pineapples still being commercially grown on this island. I have traveled many parts of the island, seeing where there were fields and fields of sugar or pineapple, now replaced by new tract subdivisions, golf courses and vegetable farms. A designer Lettuce called Nalo Greens, often graces the menus of Fine Dining Restaurants, including it in the description of their salads. Just the other day I had the occasion to travel through the back road of Kunia, ... read more

Dahna: Ok, I'm going to have to condense this last leg of our Hawaii trip because we have now been in rainy Vancouver for nearly two weeks and the memory of Hawaii is fading as quickly as my tan. Sooo, here goes my attempt at something between an essay and a synopsis: With only a few days to go in Hawaii, we realised it was time to get realistic. We were not going to be able to kayak along the Kona coast, mountain bike around the whole island, hike up to Mauna Lowa and Mauna Kea summits, watch big wave surfers and/or an international surfing contest, learn how to use an outrigger canoe... etc. Everywhere you go someone has a suggestion of where else you should go or what else you should do. But with only ... read more
