Another sunny weekend, so I decided to get my needed exercise and fresh air. The TV was advertising a Local Arts Craft Fair at the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki, so that’s where I headed. Actually it was a small affair, nothing compared to the one’s held near Christmas at Thomas Square, but was able to see what was new on the local art and craft scene. Noticed some ceramic work, which was shaped into conch shells, rectangle shaped lamps with colorful Aloha Fabrics, fabric leis which can command quite a good price and are given often for graduations, birthdays and any special or non-special occasions. It didn’t quite satisfy my walking requirements, so I continued on further by car, Eastbound around Diamondhead Crater though an exclusive Neighborhood called Kahala, which some call the Beverly Hills of ... read more

Dahna: After a long flight including a particularly long and uneventful four hour stop over at Fiji airport, we flew into Honolulu sleepless. We decided to take a 12 day stop over in Hawaii to absorb a final bit of summer before heading into Canada's almost eternal winter. It almost didn't happen due to some complications with the US embassy, but that is too boring to go into. Cheesy, busy, tacky and touristy would be the first words that come to mind about Honolulu, unfortunately, but you can also see the tropical island underneath there - somewhere. Not at 8am in the morning after over 24 hours without sleep though. As soon as we had checked in at the cheapest hostel in town, we went hunting for breakfast. Just as we turned the corner an alert ... read more

well hello ya'll. ashlie here with my first personal entry. I'm sure helenas been keeping you updated so im just gonna let you know what we got up to yesterday... Well after a whole plava with getting on a free organised trip with our somewhat irritating hostel, we set off for a twelve mile hike through a volcano!! It isnt quite what you'd expect. no flowing lava or hot rocks flying around... it was dorment, but absolutely beautiful, we were in a group of about twelve, and we each had our highs, and our lows. we began descending into the crater and were all pretty positive, thought we were fully prepared. After about an hour i think we'd all finished our lunches were staring to burn and had drunk our waters in one go thinking wed ... read more

Hi and how are you all in the cold winter at home? :) I heard the weather has been awful in London and the whole of Europe? Poor you.. First, I'd like to say sorry for not writing that much, I just had a comlaint from my dear mum saying;' you don't write often enough'. Ha ha. Anyway, we're in Hawaii now. We flew in on Tuesday to Honolulu and been staying in a place called Waikiki. The weather is georgous, about 28 degrees every day. It's a pretty touristy place, but still lovely beaches and good for the night life side of it. Also, good for beginner surfers like me.. Yes, that's right, I did try surfing the other day! Both me and Ashlie had an hour lesson and it was the best thing I ... read more

The north shore of Molokai. Blue sky. Blue water. Green cliffs. Windy, I forgot how windy it is here, how it can wake you in the night, how the coconut palms are always fighting the wind, looking tattered and tired. Occasionally the wind lets up, then the constant background sound is the crashing of north shore waves.... read more

Left the cold weather behind of Las Vegas and heading off to 'paradise'!! On arrival in Honolulu airport we recieved a traditional 'Lei' Meet and Greet from the locals. They make you feel very welcomed. At our hotel was no different, warm smiles and beautiful orchids all around... Positioning of our new home for the next 7 days could be no better, centre of Waikiki beach and shopping/restaurant area. Best beach we've ever been to, where everything happens and everyone is. Hard to get a spot to lay down, it shoulder to shoulder, you get use to it : ) The water 'cristal clear' as we never seen before!!! You can see you toes from any depth... The island is surrounded by coral reef which allows for great surfing; the water level is shallow you can ... read more

Still at Maui, so woke up and got off the ship and jumped in our car. This time we headed west. Along the way stopped at lookouts or beaches. Arrived at our destination Lahiana which was a busy town with lots of shopping and restaurants. So had a look around the area. We had originally booked to do surfing lessons here but it was so flat it wouldn’t be worth it. We will try again in Honolulu where we will be in the next few days. So just headed to the beach and went for a swim and sat around. Nice cruisy day. Then walked back up the car and drove back to the pier. Stopped a big shopping center and had a look around. Gave the car back and jumped back on the ship. Had ... read more

I travel to Hawaii a lot with work. As it's one of Harmony's main routes I am there pretty much every week. Shame, eh. Most layovers go the same way - arrive, chill, shop, eat, drink, walk about a bit. However, sometimes we get adventurous and do something different. It depends who you are working with and what the weather is doing. It's winter in Hawaii and there has been a lot of rain and showers and also some pretty big wind storms. Last week, we flew into Honolulu on Wednesday and it was cloudy and damp. So we thought that it would be a great idea to rent a car the next day and get out of Waikiki for a change. Waikiki is the main tourist beach area and very Americanised. You can find an ... read more

Arrived in Maui which was even hotter than the last island. We decided to hire a car as we were to be at this island for 2 days. So we hired a car and headed down the Hana Highway which was to the east side of the island. The drive was similar to the great ocean rd drive with all the scenery and lookouts. So we drove past a sign saying twin falls. So we got out and started to walk to these falls. About 45 mins lata and after climbing through rainforests, over rivers and in the mud we finally found a waterfall. There were no signs saying how far to where to go so we had no idea if we were going the right way. So headed back to the car and kept driving. ... read more

Decided to follow my Doctor’s advice and get some exercise, walking. Went to the Ala Moana Shopping Center and apparently every Tuesday and Thursdays, at 12 noon, the Polynesian Culture Center put on a mini-show to encourage customers to come to their show located near the North Shore in town called Laie about an hours drive from Honolulu. I hear mix reactions form tourists who’ve been there, some saying it’s a waste of time and others who really love it. For myself, I’ve seen Polynesian dances often and never tire of it. The dances are often very lively and music quite pleasing to the Western or even I imagine, to the Eastern ear. The Samoans have their flaming knife twirling and tossing dance, which one must see at least once in their life to believe what ... read more
