From CBS, and other news media outlets: Hawaii is ending the sale of sunscreen containing two chemicals believed to harm coral reefs. Gov. David Ige on Tuesday signed legislation which makes Hawaii the first U.S. state to enact a ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate. "This is just one small step toward protecting and restoring the resiliency of Hawaii's reefs," Ige said at a signing ceremony for url= bill, which takes effect in 2021. He said the state would need to continue other efforts to protect coral, including fighting invasive species, pollution from land runoff and climate change. Sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate will only be available to those with a prescription from a physician. Others will ha... read more

I did not know this: Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. with two official languages – Hawaiian and English. There was no written version of the Hawaiian language until 1820 when western missionaries living in the islands first standardized one, according to Instant Hawaii. There are just 13 letters – eight consonants and five vowels. You can snow ski on the Big Island: Mauna Kea is a 13,796-foot url= mountain with a top that occasionally gets just enough snow for people to ski. There are no lifts, no grooming, no resorts, but a road that... read more

We haven’t been to Kona in a few has grown quite a bit and is now a busy little city with lots of hotels and condos strung along the coast. Kona is considered the sunny side of the Big Island but on this particular day we had a bit of rain. We took an open-air shuttle bus around to see the island and to pick up a few necessities. King Kamehameha spent his final years in Kona. A Chinese restaurant seemed just the right place for lunch. Sam Choy, a guest chef on board, is quite famous throughout Hawaii for his innovative cooking style. When we told the owner of the Chinese restaurant that he was on our ship she was very proud to hear that. She said that Sam always tells her she has ... read more

On this our last day here, Jan and Jackie took a ferry ride to Lanai, one of the two islands you can see from this side of Maui, the other being Molokai. They were booked on the ferry yesterday, but when they arrived at the dock the agent told them that the sea was very choppy and they couldn't guaranty that the boat would make the return trip later in the day. If that happened, they would have to spend the night on Lanai. They were told that the only hotel on the island was the Four Seasons and the cheapest room was $1,175/night. So they decided to put the trip off until Friday. The seas and winds were much calmer Friday and I dropped them off at the docks for their excursion. I headed over ... read more
