We haven’t been to Kona in a few years...it has grown quite a bit and is now a busy little city with lots of hotels and condos strung along the coast. Kona is considered the sunny side of the Big Island but on this particular day we had a bit of rain. We took an open-air shuttle bus around to see the island and to pick up a few necessities. King Kamehameha spent his final years in Kona. A Chinese restaurant seemed just the right place for lunch. Sam Choy, a guest chef on board, is quite famous throughout Hawaii for his innovative cooking style. On this our last day here, Jan and Jackie took a ferry ride to Lanai, one of the two islands you can see from this side of Maui, the other being Molokai. They were booked on the ferry yesterday, but when they arrived at the dock the agent told them that the sea was very choppy and they couldn't guaranty that the boat would make the return trip later in the day. If that happened, they would have to spend the night on Lanai. They were told that the only hotel on the island was the Four Seasons and the cheapest room was $1,175/night. Onsdag 7. januar Jeg skulle rejse halvanden uge med en tysk pige, Juli, fra et af mine fag. Vi havde ikke snakket så meget sammen i løbet af semestret, andet end at vi havde fundet ud af at vi begge blev længere i Hawaii end de fleste andre internationale studerende som tog hjem før jul, og at vi begge gerne ville rejse til de andre øer i januar, og at vi virkede til at komme godt ud af det med hinanden. Vi aftalte at rejse sammen til to af øerne, og så rejste jeg så videre til to andre øer alene bagefter da Juli skulle tilbage til Europa tidligere end mig, og desuden havde besøgt de to andre øer jeg tog til bagefter.
