We‘re up at the crack of dawn again for our 6.20am pickup for today’s little exercise, a trip along the apparently legendary road to the remote settlement of Hana on Maui’s easternmost tip. After yesterday’s pickup fiasco we’re extra careful to arrive very early, and we split up to make sure we’ve got most bases covered if the bus decides to turn up at the wrong place again. No such dramas this morning however, and our guide introduces herself as Yvonne. She’s an avid animal lover who owns two dogs (one of which has three legs and is called Tripod), a turtle, and several fish in a pond in her backyard. Her prize possession is however her pet pig Cooney, who, perhaps unsurprisingly, is more than a tad overweight, thanks largely apparently to the efforts of ... read more

The single lane bridges that appeared out of nowhere with barely a peek at the oncoming traffic and the reportedly 500 turns, required focused attention and agility on the part of the driver (that was Jim). Along with the front seat passenger whose invaluable assistance goes unappreciated (that was me and I am justifying my behaviour) over the six hours it took us to drive the 60 miles - that includes the hikes and stops. I got a few 'looks' from Jim when, periodically, I squealed, "Oh my God!" with a gasp of air as I sucked in dramatically and held it. But mostly both of us were on our best behaviour ... read more

The proliferation of sprawling mega resorts, chain stores, and franchise restaurants makes it nearly impossible to find any local businesses to support, as they are definitely a dying breed in the Hawaiian Islands.Perhaps the best example is car rental firms, a business sector where it seems that independent agencies simply don't exist anymore. However, as we did some trip planning we came across an independent and local car rental agency, which not only offered the benefit of being a bit cheaper than the big boys, but was also far more convenient since it was just a short walk ... read more

If highway 340 around the West Maui mountains is the narrowest and most scary road on Maui, then the road to Hana is the prettiest. Some guide books warn that this road is also narrow and twisty, but it actually is two lanes all the way to Hana, and not scary to drive at all. The road does get narrow for a little ways if you go past Hana and around the back of Haleakela, with a section of it unpaved, and this is another place that the car rental companies don't want you to go. So, since we didn't know that the road was so good, and we wanted to go all the way around, I thought that we should take a tour so that Steve could be a passenger for once and be able ... read more
