What a varied and lovely day – a dry day. After a speedy breakfast we headed out before 7:30 to cross the “Saddle Road” from West to East again – this time all the way to Hilo. Our first stop, however, was the lovely Kaulana Manu trail where we’d enjoyed a walk yesterday. Getting there early rewarded us with a lovely red I’iwi – he loves the Ohi’o tree’s red puffy flowers too. And the Japanese Whiteeye. Then off to the Rainbow Falls in a park just outside the city of Hilo. Yes, we saw the rainbow colors in the mist. It was a very small park so we only stayed 15 mins – there was an enormous banyan tree there too. Then we drove 5 mins to the Boiling Pots section of the park – ... read more

Sunday morning so we went to church, and fortunately found a very nice one at New Hope Legacy (evidently part of a larger church on Oahu). About 60 people were there, with a 6 – piece praise band. Nice songs and very warm welcome. That started at 8:30. After a quick stop at the grocery store and checking in with our family on Whatsapp, we did a fast change and headed for the high country of Mauna Kea. The temperature started off at 81 degrees and by the time we got to the Visitor’s Center of Mauna Kea it was 62 degrees. There are wild goats all along the “Saddle Road” that goes from west to east on the island, and when we returned we noticed hundreds of sheep grazing inside the fencing. One can’t ascend ... read more

As usual, writing this for the 2ndamazes me, as it seems like we have squeezed in at least 2 full days, and not just one. I'm wiped out! Of course we were up early, but this time waited for the sun. Made a coffee and arrived at the Paradise Bakery by 7:15 for our one purchase of Malasadas, a Portuguese filled donut. Evidently they make 1000 every morning, and yes they were mighty fresh. David had coconut cream filled, I had one filled with pineapple jam, and the other with a local fruit, lilikoi – like passionfruit. We ate one right away before driving the 30-40 mins north to the Black 49 Beach, just south of where we were yesterday at Mauna Lani. We were #13 for 20 parking passes – it is a holiday weekend ... read more

Up with the crickets again to cook our oatmeal breakfast and head up the hill again. It was 52 this time when we got there!! But this time we were dressed more for it. No new birds, just the lovely usual. Instead I took more photos of the plantings. After a short turnaround, we headed north to the beach at Mauna Lani. We had been there before in December 2021. The water was just about as cold this time, and the walk from the parking lot at the restrooms a LONG ¾ mile because we were lugging the 2 chairs, cooler with waters, and snorkeling gear across the smooth undulating lava fields. By then it was 90 degrees, per the car. Still, it was well worth it. An easy sandy entrance gives way to many coral ... read more

Hawaii Blog 2023 On Wednesday the 30th we were up before the birds (3:00 am) to drive to Columbus for an excellent Southwest connection through Las Vegas. It is amazingly bleak and brown as you fly near Las Vegas! We had Row 14 exit row seats – great leg room and empty middle seat, lucky us. When we arrived David had arranged a surprise welcome party with lovely leis and a kukui nut bracelet. Happy late 52nd anniversary to us! Our car rental – expensive – is a small car (couldn’t get both large suitcases in the trunk, tho’ we didn’t try very hard) but sporty – a Ford Mustang. Good exercise getting in and out too. The AirBnB is only 10 mins from the Kailua-Kona airport, and is just like the back half of a ... read more

... read more

I’m so tired/relaxed/tipsy, I almost cannot write this. I’ll have some more wine, while watching the surfers the sunset from our balcony, and maybe it will get more entertaining. So we upped sticks from our beautiful view in Kauai and headed for another beautiful view on Big Island, just south of Kona. But not before we finished our final adventure activity with some tubing. Packed up all our stuff and drove just outside of Lihue where we were kitted out before being driven to the ‘backcountry’ to start our adventures The channels we were going to travel along were mostly handcut (except for one unsuccessful dynamite attempt) by immigrants to provide irrigation (for sugar I think) but now provide water supplies across the island…and tubing. A short safety briefing and we were tipped in to the ... read more
