Kenly NC
In Warren, OH, there was a theater impresario who had a Broadway summer stock theater. His name was Kenly and calling for tickets, I ALWAYS got good seats. Hooray!! Our spring vacation trip to the south is here. We left Thursday afternoon and headed south to see our new grandson. Yes, we’d also see Josh and Jen. But 3 months in infant growth is a lot of change. Although Josh and Jen had Skyped us and we had had a chance to see Drew, it’s always better to see in person.
We only got as far a Lumberton, NC the first day. We had hoped to get to Florence and camp where they had a hot tub, but it was just a bit too far. However, the next day, we got to Savanna, GA and met Darryl and Robbie Coleman for lunch. We had stayed with them for a couple of nights last year on our way north, and though we could only meet for lunch, it was great to see them again. Darrel is now at Parris Island Recruit Depot and back working for the Marines. Years ago, I had hired Darrel in Iwakuni, Japan, and we have been friends ever since.
We got in to Jacksonville Friday afternoon and Josh was home with Drew. Jen hadn’t gotten home yet and we had fun holding, playing,
HI GUYS!
I'm a very happy little fellow and I'm learning to eat solids. I'll have even better luck when my tooth comes in. and laughing with him. Jen got home and then Josh and Trish went out and got dinner and brought it back. We are amazed at how much Drew has grown in 3 1/2 months and the skills he has. He looks at you, recognizes you (after a bit) and laughs and giggles. It is also uncanny how much he looks like Josh did when he was little. Since folks say Josh looks like me.....well, poor kid, he's in for a rough time.
Saturday, Josh had to work, so we had more alone time with Drew and Jen. Drew is developing a real personality, laughing, giggling, and at times pouting when things aren’t right. He and Josh really have bonded and Drew is laughing loudest when Josh goes in to change a wet or dirty diaper. (Don’t ask why, we didn’t.) Josh had asked if I would help with some “projects” around the house. I was able to fix the mower so it ran better (clogged air filter) and restring the pull cord on a power washer. Those who know me will know this was no small feat. (Yes, Trish helped with technical advice and a second pair of hands.)
Skyping Auntie Kim
We called Kim and using Skype, she was able to see her nephew (and brother). Jen is clearly amused at Josh's antics with Drew. Josh also wanted help with a gutter we had put up a number of years ago and has come undone. We got parts but didn’t get that finished.
Sunday Drew was getting cranky because of congestion. We think he also is starting to teeth. As a result, the trip we had planned to take to visit Camp Blanding was postponed. Instead we watched a movie with the kids, hung out with them. But thanks to Skype, we were able to call Auntie Kim and she could see Drew (and Josh and Jen) and chat with them for a while. Skype is really great for keeping families in touch. You see it used a lot with our military overseas keeping in touch with families at home.
Monday Jen went to work and we were all going to go visit Camp Blanding, but Drew was still cranky. So we took Josh’s truck and went on our own. Unfortunately, the military recreation book we had was out of date and they would not let us even onto the base. Se we drove back and visited NAS Jacksonville and saw their campground. Trish and I had a nice seafood lunch and then
Oba-san and Drew
To avoid confusion with his other grandparents, we opted to use the Japanese name for grandma--Oba-san. back to Josh. We stopped and picked up groceries and that evening fixed okinomiyaki for everyone, something of a tradition when we visit.
The next morning it was to be up early for our drive to Alabama and looking for retirement property in the Fort Payne area. We’ll let you know how that went.

Oh baby- you're cute!
Thanks so much for including me in this blog. Looks as if Drew is getting lots of TLC - lucky child. It's hard for me to think of John and Trish as grandparents, but now I have proof! If you Fredericksburgers head south again this summer, why not stop in Newton, NC, where I'll be from June 3 to end of August. Tomorrow I fly to MN to connect with Greta who has my car. Then we start our May adventure. Lots of love to ALL of you- Aunt D
