Shakedown at Lake Anna
Trish's Class C, our small A, and Lodges, at Lake Anna State Park. If it looks familiar, it's the same sites Lodges and we had the previous year. Since helping out our friends, we've had a couple of more shake down cruises. First was to Lake Anna State Park in Louisa. We had gone there last year with our friends, the Lodges, and this year Trish Moore, from the So-We-Go Sams club joined us. While the week prior had been sunny, hot and in the 80s, this weekend was cold, some rain, and dreary. At first, Trish wasn't going to join us, but we convinced her it would be fun. In fact, when we got to the park, she was waiting for us. We picked 3 adjacent sites, set up, and waited for Lodges. Trish came over and we had a great time chatting, listening to Bluegrass, and munching on cookies and coffee.
Lodges arrived and after greetings all around, we ended up in our own coaches for dinner. Later, all sitting with Dave and Bonnie (who have the biggest coach of the 3), Trish treated us to scones and coffee. We chatted till late evening and then headed for bed. It was cold, but not uncomfortable. Next day we worked on projects on our coaches: replacing a burned out lite, tightening connections for TV, new struts to hold
"Chillin' with So-We-Go"
Yes, the evenings were cool, but blankets and a campfire made for good conversations. up a bed for the understorage, etc. Then it was off to Louisa for barbecue, followed by ice cream and then to the Cooper winery for a wine tasting and purchase. Back at the campground, we relaxed, had dinner and then gathered at Lodges for the obligatory Saturday evening s'mores by the campfire. Trish remarked she had never been to a state park to camp and really liked it. We all recommended other parks to her and finally all went to bed.
Nest day, as the rain made a re-appearance, we struck the camp, folded up outside things, and headed home. It was a most pleasant shakedown with friends, fellowship, and food....(and wine).
Two weeks later was our first So-We-Go Good Sam outing. We went to the Endless Caverns in New Market, VA. We got in early and were escorted to our site. The campground is on the edge of the George Washington Forest, and on a hill. They have carved out nice sites, but the hill is gravel, steep, and instead of grouping us, the strung the whole club up and down the hill. It made for long climbs to the dinners and campfires. We would have been
Afternoon relaxing
Some of the group practiced routines for our Spring Samboree parade, others just watched or caught up on friendships. perfectly happy with a back-in site (and had told the folks we we registered earlier that very thing.) So that was not as much fun as we might have.
But seeing everyone there was good. Friday nite gathering was potluck and then a campfire. The next day, I went with a couple to the New Market Battlefield and learned about the young boys from VMI who rushed up to help the Confederacy repulse the Union attack in the spring of 1864. It was a moving story and seeing much of the battlefield as it originally was, including the family farm and outbuildings gave a real sense of the intimacy of battle in the Civil War.
We took the cats on both trips and they were much more relaxed and comfortable. Part of the reason may be that we have the air bag lifters fixed so the coach rides smoother on the road, without the bumps and bangs. Also, Domino is getting very good about staying right near the coach. He even came up and scratched on the outside of the door to come in at one point. Slinky is still leery about it, but does come out
Cat People
We are the only campers in the club with cats; most others have dogs, and bring them. We wanted to establish that we, indeed, are cat folks. in the daylight and sits up front, watching folks come and go.
That evening, there was more good food, another campfire, and pleasant conversation. Yes, it was colder than we would have liked, but that's camping! There was no rain (or snow) and the bugs were not out. When we packed up and headed home, we knew it would only be a short time before we once more were heading out to Florida, to see the kids and young Drew, the new grandson.
