Having grown up in a big city, I generally don't visit big cities on vacations, so when Marilyn suggested we spend our last couple days in Florida on South Beach, I wasn't so sure about it. Now I'm really glad we went. It was beautiful there.
On the drive from Hawks Cay to South Beach, I wanted to see if we could find the location where they filmed the classic movie, "Key Largo, " with Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson and Lionel Barrymore. It was directed by one of my favorite directors, John Huston. I'm crazy for old movies, and this is one of my all time favorites. I remembered having seen some kind of sign about it on our drive to Key West a week ago. Since it was also lunch time, we started looking for somewhere to eat when a sign for the Caribbean Club caught my eye. We made a U turn and then saw that the sign said it was the location of the film. It turned out they don't serve food at the Caribbean Club, but we stayed and had a couple refreshments there. It turned out to be a fun
time. The movie took place in a hotel on Key Largo and, unfortunately, the hotel is long gone. But this piece of beach is where it stood and where the movie was made. After our hijinks at the Caribbean Club we made our way to South Beach.
We were staying at a very nice boutique hotel there named the Shore Club. It was right in the middle of South Beach. We had rooms with a beautiful view of the beach. This is where the "beautiful people" come and there were plenty of them to see here. We don't have their wealth or level of beauty so I personally never felt like I fit in, but it was fun to people watch. The weather was beautiful today when we arrived, 82 degrees and sunny, the best day of the whole trip. Unfortunately, I was now pretty sick with the community cold that was passed around. The next day, I just stayed in bed almost the whole day while Jan, Marilyn and Dan went to the pool and enjoyed the beach. I felt a little better at dinner time and we enjoyed a wonderful Italian meal on Collins Ave.
The next day was pretty cool, 51 degrees when Jan and I decided to go for a walk along the beach. Even though it was pretty cool, it was still 60 degrees warmer than Chicago that morning. That evening, we had another great dinner and the next day we were heading home. There was going to be a big wine and food event on the beach called Sobefest the 19th through the 22nd. You can see the enormous tent set up for it in one of the photos. There was some conversation about staying a couple more days and it would have been a blast to attend it, but even if we could rearrange our schedules, there were no rooms available. So we resigned ourselves to going home to the arctic weather.
We chose to take a leisurely route to the Ft. Lauderdale airport, driving straight up A1A through Miami Beach all the way to the airport. We stopped at a wonderful waterside seafood restaurant and had a sumptuous lunch before getting to the airport. Just what you need to help you fall asleep on the flight home. Although the weather wasn't as warm as you would
hope, it was darn good enough. We had another memorable vacation together.
