Just outside the gate of the Groton Submarine Base in Groton Connecticut is the permanent berth of the USS Nautilus and the location of the Submarine Force Museum. The keel of the USS Nautilus was laid on June 14, 1952 at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, Groton, Connecticut by President Harry S. Truman. On January 21, 1954 Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower broke the traditional bottle of champagne across Nautilus' bow. On the morning of January 17, 1955 the Nautilus was the first US submarine to set sail under nuclear power. The Nautilus departed Pearl Harbor Hawaii on July 23, 1958 under Top Secret orders to conduct the first crossing of the north pole by a ship. With 116 men aboard, the USS Nautilus reached the geographic North Pole on August 3, 1958. In the ... read more

We finallymade to first destination, Farmongton, CT. It was a long day, but really relaxing. First we had to make it out of NJ. That always seems to be our first goal when we ride. It is particularly difficult when you are going to New England. We had a ice relaxing ride from Trenton to Somerville where we picked up 287. A couple of years ago, on one of our first multiday trips, we did 287. It was terrifying There are times that 287 becomes a five lane highway. Well, I am happy to say that we are definitely feeling more seasoned. We did 287 today, and it wasnt bad. Our travels were, however, greatly extended when we decided to get off of rt. 84 because of heavy (think parking lot)traffic. We took an alternate route ... read more

Well, the airplane tickets have been bought. Creating the blog and before we know it August 8th will be upon us. This is my third trip to Connecticut and the kids' second. Since Michael has grandparents that lived there, that was where summer vacations were spent in his youth. We were in CT in 1996 for the first time as a couple. We were newly married and drove out there with his parents and two younger siblings, who were still in high school at the time. Lots of rain that time and we went in June -- brr was the water cold!! Last time we set foot on CT soil was August 2002. At that time, Michael's entire family met in Connecticut -- back to their roots. As they are spread out across the nation, it ... read more

We live (lucky people) on a small lake in Connecticut with several oak trees round our house. We have had lots and lots of rain for the past several weeks. Yesterday afternoon, during an exceptionally heavy downpour, I heard a big crash. There used to be two big oak trees between me and the lake. Now there is one. The second oak tree is now in the lake. Fortunately, the water near the shoreline is very shallow, so most of the tree is above water. What has all this to do with a sailing trip? Simply that it will take me a few days to make the necessary arrangements to get the tree removed from the lake and carted away, so we will not be able to go down and work on Pavane until sometime next ... read more

So sorry for being so negligent in my blogging this summer. I can't come up with any acceptable excuses for lack of attention to this single responsibility that Sally has given me. We arrived in Connecticut on June 12th. The weather for the first two weeks after our arrival was fantastic. Daily highs averaged in the 70's and the lows at night were in the 50's. Perfect sleeping weather. Most areas of the state had their second wettest June on record. This area had about 9 inches of rain in June which is one reason why the temperatures were so cool. This all came to an abrupt end about two weeks ago when the temperatures shot up into the low 90's and the humidity went up as well. The temperatures have fluctuated in the 80's to ... read more

Some final thoughts on our trip. While the scenery might have been better in the sun, still the drizzle and mists are what I think of when I think of Scotland. Since it was lambing season, we say lots of black faced babies gamboling in the meadow, the ewes grazing or both just taking a little lie down. We say highland cattle, horses with blankets on and some without, gulls and oyster catchers and ring-necked pheasant and a group of bunnies nibbling the grass. All the hotels were fine except for the one at Oban. Although Mike tried to lower our expectations, still even he was distressed at how far down it had gone. It is a old hotel on the historic registry which means that repairs and upgrades have to be approved and that is ... read more

We decided to leave Warrenton/Roundtop, Texas on Monday, April 1. We had already been there (and set up for 10 days). What we didn’t know when we ‘signed on’ to do the show….that there is a ‘pre-show’, of which we were part and if you do the pre-show and the regular show…it lasts almost 3 weeks!! We were told that, on Tuesday, wealthy women from Dallas & Houston, would be flying in and Limousined in for a different section of the show, which is down the road a bit and eventually some of them would ‘dribble’ through the fields where we were. We’d had enough of people ‘dribbling’ through for the 10 days that we were set up and we did make some money…..so we were ready to leave. Note about Warrenton/Roundtop antiques show….it is actually ... read more

Geo: 41.1481, -73.493There's something odd about Amtrak trains - you buy 'reserved coach' seats (that's standard class) but they don't allocate you seats. So you get on two stops after the start and its a real struggle to find two seats together! So Liz decided we would hijack two seats for handicapped travellers and no-one, not even the conductor, seemed to mind. And we were met at Stamford station by David.Immediately the problems posed by Hurricane Sandy presented themselves. Our next train was booked for Monday, and Thursday we have a flight booked to Charleston. Should we leave on Sunday instead, as the weather got worse it seemed unlikely the Monday evening trains would run, and then we got the e-mail from Amtrak telling us our Monday train was, indeed, cancelled. So we now have an ... read more

Sensory Perception My very first sight of Italy was when we were flying; following the coastline along the West down to Rome. The light was diffuse, it was early afternoon and the dark water was sparkling in the sunlight. The rolling hills of that region are dotted with farms; the sections of which are irregular and misshapen compared to the very neat squares of farm acreage we see in the U.S. The patches of trees and plants were a crazy quilt draped over the landscape. Dotted here and there were small communities; towns and villages, glowing among the verdant greens. Rome is a busy city, bustling at all hours, traffic rumbling and horns honking. The motor scooters buzz by the cars and buses, they weave in and out with centimeters to spare, horns beep constantly. The ... read more
