It was in the summer of 2016 when I visited the Trinidad History Museum and received a great tour. I got entry and a full tour of the Baca House and the Bloom Mansion for free. (Now they have a small entry fee.) I started with the main museum with the exhibits I posted in this blog. The tour of the houses are available with the museum guide only. Outside they have a nice garden where visitors can eat the veggies for free. In the main museum they had a bushel of good apples and invited me to take a bag of apples also free. No trip to Trinidad, Colorado would be complete without a visit to the Kit Carson (city) park. The park is up a hill in nice trees including Colorado Blue Spruce. They have a full size bronze statue of Carson on a sturdy horse, placed there in 1913. There is a good view there of Fisher's Peak; a notable landmark on the Santa Fe Trail. I could sit there for hours enjoying the natural setting and thinking about the rich history of Trinidad and "Kit". Christopher Houston (Kit) Carson (1809-1868) was a true American frontiersman and his exaggerated myth was told in the "dime novels" of the time. We took the later wake up time of 5:30am by default his morning and it still took us longer than normal to get ready. The temperature was cool but nowhere near as cold as the previous 2 days. We started off slowly to get the body warm and soon realised that we had a slight head wind to counter. We were doing 20km stints for the first rotation through the RV which would take us all the way through our climb for the day. The climb was gentle, rarely getting over 5% and mostly below 4%. We are now officially American. In order to break up our drive from Texas to Colorado Springs, we “camped” in Trinidad, Colorado. But here's the thing, we didn't just camp, we Walmart camped! We had heard of this true blue kind of camping online, and felt we wouldn't be true Americans if we road-trip across America without doing this. Arriving in Trinidad right before sundown, we located the local Walmart, found the row of Rvs parked on the far side of the parking lot and pulled our van inbetween. It felt like we were pioneers, traversing a new-found land, and circling up our wagons for protection through the night...in some strange, modern sort of way.
