The South Canyon Fire was a 1994 wildfire that took the lives of 14 wildland firefighters on Storm King Mountain, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado on July 6th, 1994. It is often also referred to as the "Storm King" fire. Fire OriginOn July 2, 1994 lightning sparked a fire near the base of Storm King Mountain, 7 miles (11 km) west of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Initially small and well away from private property, the fire was assigned low priority and allowed to smolder for the first two days. By July 4th, the fire had burned only 3 acres (12,000 m2). Nearby residents of Canyon Creek Estates, however, were growing increasingly concerned by the persistent blaze, prompting local authorities to take action. Due to the ruggedness of the terrain, and the efforts necessary to coordinate the incident response, ... read more

Hi again, we are headed to Colorado today. Want to get as far as we can today. We ended up in Glenwood Springs, CO. Between Grand Junction and Aspen. Starting to get up higher and the air was a little cooler. The campsite wasn't great, but it was cheap and we needed to stop. Drove into Glenwood Springs to get groceries, and sort of look around, but we were tired and so we just sat and chilled.... read more

Days 9 to 12 of my journey My first night in Denver was spent at an an apartment/condo that Tate shared with his friend Chris. Despite the complete mess the place was kept in (especially the disaster in the kitchen) Tate and particularly Chris had a great sense of humor about it. Expecting to get a steak dinner somewhere in Denver that night, budget constraints forced us all to throw something together. We created what Chris coined "hamburger disaster" which basically was a creative way to get lots of protein (with loads of hamburger meat, chilies and onions). It was surprisingly good all things considered. Chris and I had bought Tate a "Snickers"ice cream cake for his birthday the following day which me topped with a charming or maybe pathetic singing candle. It was not a ... read more

I don't claim to be an American West history buff, but I love the story of Doc Holliday as I know it (which is, honestly, the Hollywood story of Doc Holliday). I love watching movies about Wyatt Earp and him and the OK Corral gunfight. My favorite is "Tombstone," which is, quite honestly, one of my favorite movies of all time. Andrew and I watch it together every year or so. After our most recent viewing, I made the decision that we had to go to Glenwood Springs and check out Doc's grave since it's less than a three hours' drive from us. And, so, we went for our third wedding anniversary. I've been to Glenwood Springs before, but it's been about a decade. It's in a valley, nestled between mountains. The scenery is spectacular, as ... read more

After that very long and very tiring drive last night, we were exhausted which made us both sleep like little babies. We woke up this morning in a small town called Frisco, CO and of course we were in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Unfortunately we were up before our alarm went off due to someone's car alarm that was continuously honking right beside us. We hopped up and began getting ready for the day. Tim went into Wal-Mart to pick up a few things we had on our list while I downloaded some pictures and worked on my blogs. Soon we were ready to hit the road and make our way over to the tourist trap of Vail, CO. As we entered downtown Vail, you could tell it was very very nice. Everything looked as if ... read more
