After the drive from Tennessee across the majority of the width of the US of A to Colorado, we discovered a few things: the sky really is bigger in the plains; having absolutely no trees in a campground makes you feel kind of naked all the time; and somehow, accidentally driving right by the Wizard of Oz Museum in Kansas is way too easy to do. We made it to sister Carol and Phil's place in Glenwood Springs (a few hours west of Denver) in a few days-- we're not in Kansas any more, Toto! After recuperating and some preparation (Preparation I?), the four of us (and Mika) went for a canoe trip on the Green River, which is a big tributary to the Colorado River that flows through Utah. The scenery is amazing! See the ... read more

We found an unexpected treasure in the stretch of I-70 as we entered Glenwood Springs from the east. The Colorado River winds through the Glenwood Canyon and the views from the highway in both directions are dramatic. Another surprise was a separate paved bike path that runs alongside the river below the highway from mile marker 116.8 to 131.We didn’t have our bikes with us but there are companies in town that offer bike rental and one-way drop off services. That was really tempting but we opted to go on the hike to Hanging Lake at mile marker 125 that was highly recommended to us by some other bathers at the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. It was somewhat tough 1.2 miles each way, climbing over 1100 feet by the end but stepping out onto the platform ... read more

It was a quick 100 miles from Craig to Glenwood Springs today. Our intent was to get here early and hit the Hot Springs to soak our tired bodies. There are 365 days in the year and today was the day they decided to do "maintenance" on the hot springs pools. What a total bummer. At least we got our truck washed, checked out some of the town and had a great dinner at an Asian restaurant. The icing on the cake was the double rainbows that came over our camp this evening. Colorado is the perfect place to see rainbows and this one was bright as ever. Very neat... Thanks Colorado for showing us such great colors...... read more

Last time we tried to hike to Hanging Lake, we had the kids. We turned back because the trail was too difficult to hike with them. We have the weekend to ourselves this weekend to celebrate our sixth anniversary (early), so we decided to head to Hanging Lake. Parts of the drive on I-70 were so sad. Either the beetle kill in the forests are getting much worse, or it's just easier to see in contrast to the green pines in July. To me, it looked like one dry lightning strike would just send the whole area north of I-70 past Silver Plume in flames. It's just so bad. As we neared Glenwood Springs, the views were breathtaking. The canyon's beauty is just beyond words. The rocks that jut from the river below, the green pines ... read more

In the early 1880's, James Landis homesteaded the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Grand rivers that would become Glenwood Springs. Early settlers Isaac Cooper and Walter Devereux saw the potential for Glenwood Springs to become a highly regarded destination and developed these amenities into a world class resort. The arrival of the railroads in 1887 brought the first trainloads of tourists to enjoy all that Glenwood has to offer. The addition of the Vapor Caves, Hotel Colorado and Fairy Caves provided a total package for the well-heeled traveler. The local economy was not only fueled by tourism, but also coal mining, farming and ranching, commerce and outdoor recreation. A visit to historic Glenwood Springs will take you back in time to enjoy all of the amenities that were formerly reserved for the well-to-do. Cardiff Coke ... read more

Two years ago, Andrew and I drove up to Glenwood Springs with Oliver. We tried to get to Hanging Lake, but the exit was closed for repair. On our drive to Aspen, we decided to stop and finally check it out. Let me start this post by telling you not to do this with little kids. The highway, I-70, splits because of the canyon. I-70 westbound is higher than I-70 eastbound at parts. So, you actually can only get to Hanging Lake going eastbound. We were going west. So, what we had to do was exit 121 and then follow the signs to go back east. On the way east, there is exit 125 for Hanging Lake. However, when you leave Hanging Lake, you can only get back on the highway going west. That was good ... read more

Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in between the last blog entry and this. We were going to update after leaving Vegas, but figured we didn't have enough to make it a decent blog entry. So, when we last left you off, we were making the drive to Vegas. We made it there easily within the 5 hours we expected. We booked a room at the Tropicana before we left our motel that morning, looking at the best deals we could find. I wanted to stay on the Strip, since we wanted to make sure we could walk to wherever we decided to go. We got to Vegas at about 4pm and checked in. We spent some time in our room getting ready, then left to try to find a decent dinner. We stopped at a ... read more

Not a lot to say except we went to the Elvis Cinema (Uh-huh) to watch 'Silent House'. It was interesting as it was filmed in one take. I was impressed, but more impressed with the cinema, as it was $3 to watch the film and $2 for unlimited popcorn. Thanks Elvis. For some reason, I havent written up May 24th and 25th, so I guess they were boring. This blog makes such great reading. 26th May Today was vacation day! We had decided to go do a road trip to Yellowstone Park, via Mount Rushmore and a few other select sights. However, as per our luck, the weather was due to be horrific everywhere we planned to go...heavy rain, snow and wind, so at the last minute, we changed our route. We left Greenwood Village at ... read more

N39.33.225 W107.24.645 South Canyon Springs is an interesting alternative to the commercial hot springs in the Glenwood Springs area. South Canyon Hot Springs consists of two small pools located up on a hillside with great views of the surrounding mountains. I visited the springs in January of 2012 and found only one of the two pots worth soaking in (the other was too stagnant and mucky). The Murky Pool The conditions of the springs are known to vary – sometimes they are perfect and clear and other times shallow and muddy. The larger pool was relatively clean and hot (estimated to be around 112 degrees). The pots are definitely secluded and many people who enjoy these undeveloped, natural hot springs tend to leave their clothing behind. If you plan on visiting one of these hot springs ... read more

Built in 1891, the Hotel Colorado opened its doors to the public in 1893 with 191 sleeping rooms that rented for as much as $3 a night for the most luxurious accommodations. The tower topped sandstone building was modeled after the 16th century Villa de Medici in Italy, was the area’s first electrically lit hotel, and boasted a courtyard fountain spraying skyward some 180 feet, as well as a spa and swimming pool to lure the rich into partaking of the medicinal hot springs. During its early heydays, the hotel hosted such illustrious guests as Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, as well as the "unsinkable” Molly Brown. In the 1920’s, the hotel became the playground for a number of Chicago gangsters, including Diamond Jack Alterie, the Verain Brothers, and most notably, Al Capone. During World ... read more
