track to Leadville
the highest (9927 ft) and most Westerly destination of this trip Today is a real vacation day, and I had time to review your comments to my blog - thanks, its so nice to have feedback.
This morning, DDN flew Michel and me over the Rockies - and did land on the highest airport in North America (and Europe as well). That is Lake Co airport in Leadville, about 150 km West of Denver, and its elevation is 9927 ft. Considering that I came from Rotterdam with an elevation of -15 ft, DDN has climbed all of 9942 ft (3030 m), good machine!
The airport has a 2 km runway, and it probably need that length, at least we used about 1.2 km during take-off, but the density altitude had reached 11800 ft - quite high for the 180 hp engine. But I had not refueled to keep DDN lighter, although Leadville sells the cheapest fuel in the area, only $4.75/gal, or 0.87€/l.
The view of the Rockies during the flight was gigantic - unlimited visibility, and we got a good impression of the beautiful mountains. Plus we did some sight-seeing of Denver, interesting views from 1000 ft over the city.
With W106 deg, Leadville is also the most
Red Rock Arena near Denver
famous open=air stage from 1941 Westerly airport for this vacation. But there are 18 degrees longitude more to the contiguous US, but they are for some later trip - maybe.
Tomorrow its time to fly East again, and on Friday I plan to arrive back in Boston to visit Ira & Linda Levine. Its a long flight (35 deg longitude), thus the overnight stop near Cleveland, OH, about four hours flight before Boston.
Lets see whether the plans works out...

Hi Martin, what wonderful scenery! Makes me want to reconsider venturing up into the air in a small plane. Have a safe trip back eastwards to Holland. Marga and Steve
