My path last time
Found my old map of my path last time It's been 5 years since I stuffed a backpack full of crap, booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and set off on a 6 month journey through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, Malaysia and Myanmar. In the years since I've been back I started a new job, moved into the city of San Francisco, made a lot of new friends, met my wife and daughter, moved them to Denver, bought a house, adopted a couple dogs, started my own blog about music instead of travel and made a completely different life for myself and my family. A journey that has been just as interesting and even more rewarding than those days in SE Asia, but also quite a bit more limiting when it comes to jumping on a plane to some faraway land whenever the wind moves me.
As weird as it may sound to the people who know me, I really don’t have the urge to travel very often these days. I love my family, where we live and the life we’ve created here in Colorado. But I do miss SE Asia. I miss drinking Singha while sitting in the sweltering sun after an amazing dive, I miss the
5 Years Ago
5 Years Ago sounds of the tuk-tuks and motos in the streets, I miss the smell of the markets and the orange procession of monks in the early morning. I miss green curry for lunch and masaman curry from a clay bowl for dinner. I miss everything about that small part of the world that I called home for a good majority of 2006…even the ‘same, same, but different’ attitude of the local ‘business’ men.
So when I decided it was time to go back, it took a lot more than booking a plane ticket. I had to book 2 plane tickets. We had to make sure we could both get the time off work. We had to find someone to watch our daughter while she’s on Spring Break and the next week while she’s in school. We had to find someone to take care of the dogs, watch the house, pick up the mail and all that other day-to-day stuff that wasn’t a concern just a few years ago. Summer camp sign-ups are going to happen while we are gone! Yeah, not something I was thinking about last time. But luckily my family is awesome and are working together to make
5 Years Later
5 Years Later this happen for us. My sister is flying out for a crash-course in parenting and my mom will join her for the last leg of what’s sure to be an exciting journey for all of them. Who says you need to fly half way across the world for a life-changing experience? For my sister, it’s only a 3 ½ hr. flight away!
This time around it will be 2 weeks instead of 6 months and this time I will be with my wife instead of solo. This time we will staying in ‘nice’ rooms that run the $30-70 range instead of the $3-7 range. We will spend some time in the cities (Bangkok and Phnom Penh), the islands (Koh Samui and Koh Tao), the temples (Angkor) and the beach (Sihanoukville). It’s going to be hard to fit everything in and we’ll be on the go a lot, but I can’t wait to walk those streets, dive those waters and explore those temples again. Especially this time around because I get to explore them with my wife….
I just hope she can handle the heat!
