We started our second full day in Denver with sleeping in. No one was out of bed before 8:00 am. Levi had been up once in the night, but went back down pretty easily. We caught the hotel breakfast just before they closed up. The only scheduled item for today was to meet some friends from Fort Collins at the Denver Zoo by 11:00. Their little girl is just five days older than Paul. We had been in the same birthing class as them back in 2003. We thought 11:00 am would be easy and that we could enjoy some other parts of the City Park area before meeting at the zoo. We were wrong… we got to the Zoo just a few minutes before 11 and it looked real busy! They closed the parking garage just after we got there and fortunately found someone that was leaving already as we pulled in. Our friends arrived a little after us and had to find parking in a different part of the park and walk.
Fortunately it is a big zoo, so it did not feel that crowded once we were inside. It is a very nice zoo with some great indoor
and outdoor exhibits. I guess when you have a zoo in a snowy climate, the arid and desert climate animals need special exhibits. After seeing about half the zoo, we ate a picnic lunch in a grassy area. We enjoyed several peacocks strutting around the park and harassing each other. We also had some geese come up to us. One even snuck up to Paul and got a bite of his sandwich when he wasn't looking. After lunch we continued along through the zoo and took a ride on the train and the carousel before Levi fell asleep. Our friend's little girl enjoyed pushing Levi in the stroller. Paul enjoyed not having to walk and getting to ride in a wagon our friends had brought along. We finished the zoo, including the Lorikeet exhibit where the kids tried to feed the birds nectar. It was the end of the day, so the birds weren't all the interested in drinking anymore. You almost had to shove the little cup in their face to get them to drink any. If you get there in the morning, they flock to you and will even stand on your hands, arms, head etc to get
at the nectar. Paul found one that was willing to eat though. First started at his shoe and then when Paul reach the cup of nectar up to it, it bit him. Not too hard though… Paul was willing to keep trying other birds. He said he even still liked the one that bit him the best!
By 5:00 we were done and walked our friends back to their car. Then we wandered back to ours and left to find dinner. We enjoyed a decent meal at TGI Friday's near our hotel and got the boys to bed on time. Hopefully tomorrow we can leave quite a bit earlier. We have a big day ahead of us!
