The adventures of today started in the middle of the night when Levi woke up with a fever. He was up twice and was hot and irritable. Luckily he was a pretty good sport all day and we were able to force some medicine into him as needed. He really wishes he could get normal naps in his bed. He never naps very well or very long in the stroller or the car. Poor kid! Despite our many efforts to get an earlier start to our day, it was still 10:15 before we had the car re-packed and everyone loaded up. We started out by heading to a Denver suburb North of town to visit at mall with a Hanna Andersson store. This store is one of Sarah's favorites for kids clothes (and occasionally matching mom and boy clothes). Although she can order on the internet, the stores are only located in large metropolitan areas. Unfortunately, the store didn't have any clothes Sarah liked this time but the mall did have a big play area complete with a dinosaur! So we weren't entirely unsuccessful! 😊 After our short side trip to the mall we were headed north into Wyoming and South
Dakota. The 5.5 hour trip seemed very long. We stopped in Cheyenne, WY to eat lunch and visit an Old West Museum. Not surprisingly, the kids voted on having lunch at a park with a play area across the street instead so we skipped the museum. Everyone had more fun swinging and spinning at the park. Levi slept a little bit on and off after lunch and Paul played hard in the back seat. He is great at entertaining himself with just a single piece of paper! He must have folded and re-folded the same piece of paper for the last hour of the drive. After crossing into South Dakota, we enjoyed our first glimpses of the black rolling hills. We checked into our Custer, SD hotel and went straight to dinner. Since everyone had gotten to choose something special today (Sarah the mall, the kids the lunch near the park play area), it was time for Todd to choose a dinner location where he could have a cold beer! 😊 So we found a little bar and grill downtown that served some local Montana brew and some pretty good food. Levi was particularly excited that they offered cottage cheese
as a side dish. It doesn't get better than that. After dinner we unpacked into the hotel and quickly got two very tired kids to bed. This time the boys got the private room of the suite and we stayed up too late on the other side trying to think through the details of the next few days and looking at recent photos. Our days in South Dakota are going to be busy. There is no way to see everything but we're going to try to squeeze in as much as we can!
