Anything can happen with the weather this time of year. Temperatures fluctuate by 50+ degrees. One day is a sunny bluebird day, the next a blizzard paralyzing the interstate. This year is exceptionally warm. Runoff of mud colored melting snow is streaming through the streets. This year spring breakers can work on their tans and enjoy all the entertainment ski areas, restaurants and clubs bring to town. The famed powder is a fond memory from last season and hopefully next. For the end of the 2009 season you will find the best skiing at Arapahoe Basin. The base area rests at 11,000 feet and runoff is not quite as severe as the more popular areas of Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain. You will find the best entertainment at Copper Mountain with their spring music series. ... read more

Hola, amigos! No, I haven't learned spanish out here. I wish. So back to english. Once again I've been kind of slow in providing an update on my adventures out here, so I apologize for that and am blogging in response to requests for news ; ) Things are all going really well out here. We've had 51" of snow so far this January (that's pretty good!) and the base is 55" mid-mountain. It's been warmer than December, with temperatures hovering in the 20s and 30s over the last couple weeks, so my toes are no longer in danger of frostbite. Thank goodness! I was getting tired of -10 degree mornings. The slopes are great, and I've been able to get over to Keystone, A-Basin, and even Copper and Vail (once each) whenever I need a ... read more

Hello Friends and Family... I've been remiss in blogging lately, but time flies when you're having fun! I can't believe I've been here 1 1/2 months already. It feels like so little time has passed! I want to wish you all Happy Holidays on this Christmas Eve, and hope you're with your families during my favorite part of the year. The only bad part about being out here is that I'm not with my friends and family (you!) but I'm thinking of you right now. Life in Brecken(fridge), Colorado has been good to me. It's really cold here (-5 this morning on my way to work!) but the snow is great. The whole resort is finally open, now that we have enough snow, and we've certainly had plenty of it this month. In fact, December has ... read more

Well, I'm here! I packed my life into suitcases (again) and shipped myself across the United States to Colorado, where I'll be living through May 31, 2009. If you read my last post, forget what I said about where I'll be living. That changed, rather unexpectedly. I'm still in Breckenridge for the ski season, but my friend Steve changed his mind about coming West and I had to adjust my housing plans accordingly. I don't have a car out here (the environmentalist in me frowns upon it) so I located alternative housing that is a little more accessible to the town bus system (which is awesome, btw). I'm still a 15 minute trudge uphill from my bus stop on the Purple Route (one of 5 or so routes through town) which makes for a tiring end ... read more

All apologies to our avid blog readers that were disappointed in our slowness recently, but we'll try to get caught up here. So...back to yesterday.... Our choice for our third day on snow was good ol' Breckenridge. It's only about 15 miles from our hotel so it didn't take us very long to get there. Once we parked the car (in the free parking lot..yaayy), we grabbed all of our gear and headed to the Breck Connect gondola which takes you from town to the mountain. After about a 15 minute ride, we found ourselves at the bottom of Peak 8 at Breckenridge. We were cheerfully greeted by a guest services employee with Nature's Valley granola bars and Ricola cough drops. That'll be the day when we do that at Bristol...pfff. As we always do, we ... read more

After traveling 900 miles, it makes it difficult to wake up and get going. It helps with the beautiful mountain view in Colorado. We started at I-70 to I-76, getting lost along the way and then to flat boring Nebraska. We had lunch at Taco Johns which was the worst Mexican food we ever had. Steak burrito without salsa tasted weird. As the weather changed from sunny to raining right at Nebraska, so does the traffic. Unfortunately, there was a multiple car accident and we were stuck in traffic for 1.5 hr. Despite all that, the thought of Grandma's pie push us further. We ended in Austin, Minnesota at 2 am.... read more

On Saturday September 16, 2006. Brandon (my cousin), two of his roommates; Joe and Dean, my buddy Ryan Jones, and I climbed 14,256 ft. Mt. Quandary. Our plan was to wake up at 3am and be on the trail by 4, but I didn't here my alarm so we slept in until 4:30. The morning was cold and clear so our hopes were high for a nice day on the mountain. Little did we know a summer blizzard was heading our way. As we hiked above treeline the sun was beginning to come up, but it was blocked by a thick blanket of clouds which thickened more and more until it began dumping snow on us. At first it felt good to be in snow again. The beginning was very mellow and calm, but as soon ... read more

After returning to the States I journeyed to Colorado for a few days of snowboarding at Breckenridge and the Arapahoe Basin (A Basin); however, before I could enjoy the snow I needed to get my dilapidated vehicle from the Florida Panhandle to Atlanta, Georgia. I stopped in Tallahassee to have lunch with a friend who generously provided me with directions from Mapquest.com. Now Mapquest and I have a longstanding relationship that works something like this: I ask it for directions to a destination for which I know not and it provides me with a list of turns, street names, and colorful icons that inevitable get me lost. Which is exactly what happened on this day. So there I am in some town in the middle of nowhere Georgia literal going in circles because that is what ... read more

This is one of our early family vacations that really stands out in my mind. I had never really been around mountains and snow before this vacation. It wes a big change coming from Texas during summer vacation (100+ deg weather) to Breckenridge, Colorado at an altitude of 9,603 ft above sea level and 30-40 deg weather. There was even snow everywhere, though now I realize it was not much compared to during winter. But we had a good time driving up there, stayed in a relatives condominium for a week, explored the town and neighboring Frisco. At one point we rented bikes to ride on the trails but gave up quickly due to the cold and lack of oxygen. The highlight of the whole trip was sitting in the hot tub outside, looking at the ... read more
