Our adventure for today was a ride on the Rio Grande line from Alamosa to La Veta using steam engine #18. This is a 3 hour journey one way with stops to pick up passengers at Fort Garland (a historic fort and now museum) and to drop off passengers at Fir (a site that the railroad uses in the summer for concerts). We ate lunch on the train as we left Fir heading to our final destination of La Veta. La Veta is a small town with a great ice cream shop inside Charlie's market - worth a stop if you ever get there. On our way back to Alamosa some folks on the train spotted a bear and we also saw wild turkey and some llama. As we arrived at Fir the concert was not quite over, so we hopped off the train to catch the group "Troutfishing in America" sing the Train to New Orleans song. It was worth the stop. After that it was about 2 hours to get back to Alamosa - just in time for a swim at the hotel pool.
