It was on a routine business trip to Los Angeles down Highway 99 that the thought came to me: "You know, of all highways I have ever been on, Highway 99 has got to be the most special of them all. I owe something to this Highway. This was borne... "Ode to Hwy 99" Oh, no, don't expect this to have some sort of formal stanzaic structure. No strophe, antistrophe or epode here. I just wish to write about a highway that has been a part of my life, as long as I can remember. I could not tell you where the place was. But somewhere near where we lived in Pasadena, prior to leaving on our annual camping trip, I tagged along with my dad to a store to get camping supplies. I remember the ... read more

After the debacle that was Wednesday morning I decided to try and get out of the door nice and early today. All polished and shiny I managed to get downtown to the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art (SFMOMA) at 09:50! Which was particularly brilliant as the museum didn't open until 11:00, woo-hoo! So after all my efforts I had over an hour to kill, I went and got some breakfast, which I'd neglected in my rush to get out that morning, and twiddled my thumbs for a time in the Yerba Buena Gardens opposite the museum where they were setting up some sort of temporary stage for something. My feelings on modern art, if you don't know, are generally that it is very, very shitty. Very. So I have to say that I was a ... read more

. So started a new day… The weather was wonderful, sky clear, temperature warm and only a few clouds in the sky… Perfect weather for driving down the coast and then heading for Yosemite National Park, just one or two things to check before we go… Statistics Starting Destination: Fort Bragg, California Ending Destination: Midpines, California Ending Destination GPS: N: 37° 32.581’ W: 119° 55.374’ Elev: 2645’ Miles Driven: 361.4 Best Coffee Hut of the Day: The Jitter Bean Coffee Co. Today was the first not good day I've had so far on my adventure. Considering that's 1 out of 5, and one of those days I was being invaded by resolute German aggressors, it's not too bad a ratio. Plus, it wasn't a bad day, just wasn't a good one. To start with I forgot to charge my camera battery the night before so I had to wait for that to charge before I left the house and I didn't discover it was dead until late so all in all I didn't leave the house till after midday. I had planned to do the Exploratorium and Boudin Bakery Tour today, and whilst I still had time then I was soon to learn that fate had other ideas. First off, the only bus that takes you to ... read more

October 18, 2006, Wednesday. We left Napa and arrived at Sausalito. The Chamber of Commerce was helpful, the visitor’s center was useless, but the bike store was very helpful getting us started. This is truly a biker’s heaven. We biked out of Sausalito and up, up toward the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a bike lane but the road is heavily trafficked. So, in a low gear, we just pumped slowly uphill keeping right on a very winding road with lots of other bikers, but more cars and trucks. The day was crystal clear and warm so the views as we approached San Francisco (SF) were great. Biking after 3:30 PM, take the ocean side, because it is free of tourists and reserved only for bikers. We biked out on the bayside and returned on ... read more

. Ok, so the plan for today was to drive south, visit the Avenue of the Giants, take the supposedly “heart in your mouth” twisty road to Route 1 and get as far down the California coast as we could. Carl, looked out the window when we first got up - the sky was blue, with just a hint of fog… All the elements were in place, so what happened?!... hey guys.. my first week here is over.. I am exhausted I already worked 47 hours the first week ( of course I got my $20 extra). It is Tuesday 12.30 and I just put Jamie ( 2.5 years) to bed! Late on I have to pick up Georgie and bring the kids to some doctor! I guess I will be done by 7 or 8 tonight.... But let me begin from the beginning! Most of you should have gotten my *i arrived* e mail that's why I will not say anything about the flight and my first days! It is very exhausting to have 3 kids around you, especially when you are really having trouble to get a long with the middle one! But hey....now she likes me too...took me only a week and some ... read more

I started a little earlier this morning as Pete had recommended that before I head of on my city adventures I should walk up to Tank Hill which is just around the corner from the house to check out the views from up there. Whilst it is onloy round the corner there is the small matter of the 45-degree hill that is the top of Stanyan Street to contend with first and by the time I got to Tank Hill I was sweating up a storm as it was another bright sunny day. The views were very much worth the minor heart attack, though, as you're able to get a panoramic of the entire city, from way out west on the Pacific right round to the Bay Bridge and beyond. After that I walked down to ... read more

San Diego was the last stop of our journey down the Pacific Coast Highway and as we passed the city limits sign it triggered a feeling of nostalgia and sadness as it also signaled the end of our tour down the west coast. It just didn’t seem that we have spanned the length of America in these short amount of days. We found our accommodation pretty quickly, well after a couple of the customary u-turns anyway! The motel we were staying in had a pool, so after dumping our stuff we made for a relaxing afternoon at the pool reading up on the local tourist guide to plan our next days activities. Our base for the next 4 days was Mission Bay, a 10 minute drive from Downtown San Diego and home to a long sandy ... read more

. After the unexpectedly long driving day yesterday it was more than a little difficult to get up this morning! We looked out the window, saw the beautiful blue sky, said we need to get going and rolled over and snoozed… We finally got going and will remember Grants Pass as we seemed to miss every single traffic light in town and then the wait for the green light seemed unexpectedly long… Statistics Starting Destination: Grants Pass, Oregon Ending Destination: Eureka, California Ending Destination GPS: N: 40° 46.065’ W: 124° 11.529’ Elev: 23’ Miles Driven: 192 Distance Walked: 1 mile give or take a few trees Day’s best Coffee Shack Name: The Jitter Bean Coffee Company Getting to the Redwood Highway Our tour guide from Reedsport had indicated th... read more
