Finally I get to see the famous fog that San Fran is known for. Yes my sister mentioned she heard the fog horn blaring all night. But once the fog had rolled away we were able to see the bay, the suspension bridges and Alcatraz. It was exactly as I remembered it 6 months ago when I first flew in here on route to Vancouver. So we hopped on the bikes and rode up and around the golden gate park, admiring the gardens and architecture We found some New Zealand gardens, yep those trees and plants look and sound very familiar! I found an HSBC to withdraw some money, however it was in Chinatown and was a Chinese run bank. Very different the Chinese culture, I was welcomed by a lady at the entrance and shown ... read more

. After our adventures in finding accommodation last night, we have quite a way to back-track… But the day dawns (well it wasn’t exactly dawn when we got started) with a blue sky and hardly a cloud to be found, so off we go - our destination the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks… Statistics Starting Destination: Vidalia, California Ending Destination: Bakersfield, California Ending Destination GPS: N: 35° 24.951’ W: 119° 03.577’ Elev: 447’ Miles Driven: 290 Distance Hiked: 1.5 miles Number of Times crossed an elevation of 4000 feet: 8 Backtracking We re-traced our path of last night, seeing what we could before only smell… the dairy, the citrus trees, the alfalfa fields, olive trees and several other types of “trees” that we could... read more

It was a love and hate relationship when I lived in San Francisco. I loved the fact that I was surrounded by hundreds of gourmet restaurants and electic shopping venues, but I dreaded getting from point A to point C in this densely populated city just shy of of one million. More so, I hated that I had to rid of my dependence on driving everywhere. I painfully discovered to stop being a slave to my car when my 10 year-old car stalled on California and Stockton Street, a one-way route, straight up hill. The car had come to a complete stand still (died) on a 30 degree angle uphill street, with a #1 California bus packed to the gill right up your tail. I only remembered that I had to turn off my engine and ... read more

We drown south on the Pacific Coast Highway and the scenes were super. Monterey is a neat little town so we biked around and visited some historic spots. On the way to Big Sur we took the drive around Pebble Beach Golf Course and just enjoyed in the ocean views. For some reason the ocean just mesmerizes me... read more

I took a shower in the campground. You had to pay and the water was well somewhat cold! Not fun considering the temperature had dropped to low single digits. We decided to try bike on a logging road in the redwoods after breakfast. It was only a 7km ride but basically we had to climb to the ridge before descending on the other side which took some effort. The downhill part was flowing and steep and bumpy. I kissed a tree but managed to get out of my clips and land on my feet. Naomi had a bit of a hard time (literally), her bike did not have suspension or enough gears to climb the hills comfortably so she was rattled around a bit coming down. Back on the road we headed out of the forest ... read more

My trip has started. I landed in San Francisco and made my way to the hostel. It was nice but is surrounded by strip clubs etc. A free meal was given at the hostel and I had an early night. I had a full days sight seeing the following morning. I booked myself onto the Alcatraz trip for the next day first thing. I wandered through Fisherman's Wharf, which is a touristy old fishing part of town that is now dominated by seafood stalls and restaurants. I also saw the famous Pier 39 seals (or sea lions) that have made the pier their home. I then took one of the famous cable cars up one of the famous hills. They work by a cable moving under the road, which I didn't realise was the case. They ... read more

We have had a fabulous time in San Francisco, it is a great place. We arrived to warm sunshine, which was a big and welcome change after the last couple of weeks of cold weather. Our SF initiation was the door to door shuttle service. The driver went to every terminal in the airport to make sure his mini bus was full, then dropped everyone off at their hotels. OMG! He was a maniac. You can not believe how steep the famous streets are until you are hurtling along them at ridiculous speeds. It was better than ‘The Big One’, at one point we looked down from the top of the hill, then looked at each other and said ‘ surely he isn’t going to drive down that hill!’ but he did!. Got to our hotel ... read more

. After the challenges of yesterday, the plan for today should be recover and do nothing… However, it is not to be, as we need to move on if we are to make some commitments later in the month. First stop before I leave for Korea is San Diego, California to visit my buddy Jack from college and to see my buddy Justin who is living and working in Los Angeles right now. Jack is currently working for a program that trains dolphins and sea lions for the Navy. One of his friends out in San Diego is allowed to have friends and family come out to the Navy Base to actually see and play with the dolphins up close. This isn't a Hawaiian dolphin tour where you can suit up and swim with docile dolphins in a small clear blue estuary. This is a private tour to see how smart and useful dolphins can be when they receive US Military Training. The pier isn't crowded when we arrive so Jack's friend actually lets Jack ... read more

Again woke to a clear day, however the air was very cold and there had been a thick dew. Went mountain biking again. Rode another costal loop. It started with a wopping good downhill and then flattened out running parallel to the beach, through bog, mud and rivers. After a scenic ride along the coast line it ducked up a gravel road and then up again onto a green trail well covered with leaves. Overall I would give the ride a 7.5/10. 25 km’s in total. We headed down to the Redwoods, stopping for lunch by a pounding surf beach. You don’t swim in the beaches that face directly out to the Pacific ocean. The rips will kill you if hypothermia doesn’t first. The Redwood forest was an excellent drive. We decided to ignore the high ... read more
