November is always a great time to go backpacking in the Sierra Nevada. Conditions are ripe for solitude: the children are all in school, the days are short and the weather is cold. Rain always arrives in California by Halloween, but mostly the storms have only just started to come, if at all. Because of this, only the most determined hikers and backpackers can be found in the wilderness- Fortunately for me and some friends, we were some of them! Relief Reservoir is near Sonora Pass, a 9643 ft (2919 meter) Mountain Pass that was first crossed in 1853 by only the most determined of settlers. In history, the settling of California is told from an East Coast perspective. Thus, the mass migration of these people is termed Emigration- "To leave on region and settle in ... read more

The gals visited Google and UC Berkeley today. Google was an amazing place - even tho' i've visited it once in Mar but it's still fun to meet up with folks from Google again...after so long. Emily from Google is now expecting a boy...hmm..and of course, my travelling partner and colleague, WL, a little baby also...exciting eh?! Meredith, our host for the day, has planned a good programme for them and that includes a tour of the facilities, talks by software engineer Neha and also a showcase of how Google earth can be used by Megan Goddard, a Senior GIS specialist. Of course the tour also included an impromptu speech by Meng - a fellow singaporean who is one of the few who was with Google when it started up. Hmmm..he must be a rich fella ... read more

San Fransisco is a brilliant city and I am so happy i went back an visited it again. I would say it is probably the best city in the U.S. There is so much to do and it is so spectacular, from any type of cuisine you want to amazing scenery. The hills are pretty hard on the old legs though so if any one does go there I would advise going on the tram. they are steep. The beaches there are pretty cool however the water is something else )bloody freezing). I think there was a reason why noone escasped Alcatraz. Obviously I had to do the touristy part of going over to Alcatraz and look at the cell which house Al Capone. Its a really good tour though and not a bad price, but ... read more

Our weekend was spent at Tech Museum, Roaring Camp at Henry Cowell Redwoods (redwoods incidentally refers to a type of tree..that is so so tall..at least 250m to 450m) that are found all over Palto Alto area. On Monday, we visited Stanford University, sat in to a psychology lecture, chit-chat with the current undergraduates, masters and phd students as well as take a tour of the campus. At night we visited the NUS college at Silicon valley where current NUS students are on attachment to startups in the valley. As part of SF sightseeing, we finally managed to find time to go Lombard Street which has a super steep incline and all of us climbed or jog up the slope (along the pedestrian path of course!). It was a crooked street that was teeming with tourists ... read more

We arrived in San Diego on Friday after having caught the Greyhound bus from Hollywood. Our hostel was really cool and a lot more chilled out than Hollywood. It is located in Downtown San Diego in a part of town called the gaslamp district. There are loads of bars and restaurants around which is good if you can drink. Unfortunately though James is underage and our room was at the front of the building so we got most of the noise from the pissed up Americans on Friday Night! To be honest we haven't done or seen a great deal of San diego. We've just been chilling out and met some really sound people. Got a couple of email addresses already! Been giving some good advice about Fiji and an Australian couple have given us their ... read more

We tried to avoid night driving as much as possible - you miss the scenery and Americans are aggressive muthas on the road! I dont get it, they are the nicest people UNTIL they get behind the wheel, whereupon they undergo a Jekyll and Hyde-like transmogrification and try to run everyone off the road - and when it's a 50 ton truck round a bend at night, it can get a bit hairy! Even when 10 mph over the limit, like at 85, I have had so many SUV front grills filling my rear-view mirror. One time it was a middle-aged woman, who otherwise looked perfectly timid. But we had no choice on getting into San Diego from the desert, and after some hours battling multi-lane traffic flows, we stopped off at a diner - it ... read more

To finish out the amazing summer I had this year, Michelle, her mom, and I continued on after Rainbow. The morning of July 5th, as I left off in the last blog, we three headed out of the woods. Our first stop was to a hotel where Shel and I showered up for the first time in over a week! Oh my was it wonderful to be clearn and shaven again. Then we charged our cell phones and caught up on voice mails- most of mine were from her before she was came into Rainbow and a few birthday wishes. Then we headed into the town of Steam Boat Springs for some breakfast! Ooooohhhh yum! After that long of Rainbow Mush a huge pancake was amazing. Then it was in the car and away to our ... read more

After four solid months of travelling around Europe, I was beginning to grow very weary of living out of a bag, using shared bathrooms, shared bedrooms, eating out, and constantly being on move, leaving a city just as you start to get a hold of where things are and how to get around. It was for this reason that I headed back to California for a 'holiday from my holiday'. I left Amsterdam and after 37 long hours of travelling including an 11 hour flight, a 12 hour overnight bus, a ferry and and many other buses and trains along the way, I finally arrived in San Diego where I am writing this. It was really great to get back to some warm weather, see some familiar places but most of all have the chance to ... read more

Today we visited Universal studios. The weather was fabulous but the park wasn't very crowded so we didn't have to queue to get on any of the rides. We did the studio tour and saw lots of film sets. Chloe was petrified by the Van Helsing haunted house. We went on the city walk and did some shopping and ended up going to see the Borat movie, which was one of the funniest films we've seen.... read more
