As the title says, today we started off by visiting Huntington Beach (Better known as Surf City) The beach is very very long and it was absolutely full of surfers of all ages, shapes and sizes. The weather wasn't wonderful so Chloe decided to put off surfing until another day. We met this 'awesome surfer dude' who owns a VW camper covered in stickers who came over to chat to us He was really way out. We then hit Surf City which is wall to wall surf related shops and restaurants which was amazing. After lunch we took the Pacific Coast Highway down through Newport and on to Laguna Beach. ... read more

Santa Monica Pier was one of our first stops in LA nearly 110 days ago!! Albeit we arrived there by mistake having taken a wrong turn at the end of a long day on the PCH from San Fran. Still we had wanted to go back and have a look around, walk along the pier and see 3rd street, the main shopping part. Venice beach was also on the way so the best way to see everything would be by bicycle. Manual road trip, brilliant! Nic & Martin from the hostel joined us and together we negotiated a group discount on the bike hire. So with our one gear grifter come hovis deliver boy bikes we set off. The journey in total was around 30 miles and would take the best part of 2 hours each ... read more

Another day in the desert dawned hot. We walked through golden canyon admiring the rock formations around us. Not so long ago a paved road had been built in the canyon but since flash floods come every year the rock below the road washed out destroying it. More investigation led us to such things as a natural bridge, droving around artist’s drive which boasts different coloured rocks, walked out on the salt flats in badwater which is 86m below sea level. Death Valley is an incredible place (did I say that already?) The intelligence in the processes that create the canyons, rocks and valleys is all around even though this place is a desert. We bid fairwell to the valley and its dust and headed out and up north for the bright lights of Las Vegas. ... read more

Promised major update but Internet access here (LA Airport) is poor terminal has no legible keys so excuse typos. Trip down the coast was phenomenal at least as a drive . Will have to review entries when/if we get better access in Fiji. Anyhow from San Francisco we took Greyhound bus down to Santa Barbara, partly for te experience and partly to avoid getting lost coming out of SF. Santa Barbara looked a nice lazy kind of little resort but we didn't stop much beyond picking up a hire car. Thenoff down the coast as it was getting late we by passed Monterey and headed straight for Big Sur. Fantastic drive with the sun setting over the pacific to our left and another breathtaking vista round each corner but would we find a campsite before dark? ... read more

Our plane was delayed for an hour and a half because one of the engines wasnt working (dont worry though, it was only the auxillary engine used to power the electrics) we made up an hour in flight, and arrived at 3.30 local time. The flight was quite smooth but very boring!! except, when we flew over Las Vegas, which looks awesome. We went straight through customs and collected our hire car, which was supposed to be a small economy class but dad was easily persuaded to upgrade to a chevy 4x4 :D We hit the highway at rush hour, which has to be seen to be believed, but we survived 7 lanes of traffic, and arrived safely at our hotel. We are off for an early night now and we will update our blog tomorrow. ... read more

Day 2 started with pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast in our hotel, absolutely delicious. We bought a map and set off for Hollywood. You haven't seen traffic congestion until you've driven through LA in the rush hour. We made it through the traffic okay and started driving around beverley hills randomly admiring the houses, around very corner there was something bigger and better than the last one. One house actually had nine red ferrari's parked outside!! A lot of the houses still had their Halloween decorations up which were very good. For lunch we went into Hollywood and found a shopping mall from which we had our first view of the famous 'Hollywood' sign, we did some shopping and had food in Johnny rockets, which was excellent. We had a walk around Hollywood Boulevard and ... read more

I am home and it's the same. I feel the same when I'm here. Likely this is because I am doing precisely what I was doing when I left: spending hours at home playing with my dog and computer. I will allow myself a week of this before I start to feel bad about it. The last leg of my trip was fantastic. I got to meet up with friends who have relocated to the east coast and enjoy the glory that is our land of the free! When I danced (yes I was dancing) of my plane at JFK Airport I was the most patriotic person ever. You don't EVEN know. I made my way over to Nate's place and ran into Fei, Chaz, and Antonio on the way there. Our reunion was glorious! We ... read more
