Here in San Diego, people are a lot nicer than in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a massive hole. I don't know why Americans think it's the place to make a dream come true, because 99% of the place is a slum. Beverly Hills is nice, and Hollywood is ok. Downtown had nothing happening when we went there at 5 in the afternoon. We were staying in Santa Monica, which I'm guessing is chockers in Summer because it's very close to Venice Beach, but was quiet while we were there. Of course our first two meals of the trip were at the two finest cuisine eateries in the world, McDonalds and Hooters! It is almost impossible to get a vegetable or fruit in LA that hasn't been deep fried or covered in sugar. In San Diego, ... read more

JustinoThe past few weeks have been a haze of getting our house project as far as we can, packing up, moving into a rental in Dog Beach, and getting work under control. In 3 days I leave San Diego for DC and then I will meet Heidi, Zack, and Alec in San Francisco on December 11th to start our 6 month adventure. The beginning of our itinerary is the only part that is set. San Francisco-Newark-London-Newark-Beijing. We'll be in China before the new year.... read more

Southern California: 1st September 2008 Our first stop back in the States was San Diego, just a short tram ride from the Mexican border. We had booked a hostel in the centre of town for three nights which was right next to the Gas Light district where all the restaurants and bars are. Although San Diego is quite a large city, it never seemed too busy and it was easy to get around. While there we visited the attractions at Ocean Beach, a laidback surfer hangout with lots of bars and surf shops. We also spent a whole day at the very impressive San Diego zoo where we managed to see polar bears swimming in their glass sided pool. We also saw pandas, koalas and even a two headed snake. That evening we headed out with ... read more

9 days in the land of dreams... San Diego, CA We landed in LAX..tired and stressed out! Customs was a breeze for Oscar...Stu looked shifty and got the 3rd degree from the LAPD! We headed straight for the union train station and caught the 4.10pm to San Diego. When we arrived at San Diego Santa Fe depot, it was dark and we were dazed and confused..we hadn't slept in 48hrs :( We called the first hostel we saw advertised..Ocean Beach International Hostel (No Americans allowed..bonus! :p). The hostel had a really nice atmosphere and everyone was friendly. We chatted to two cool Aussie lads..Levi and Guerry, we all headed to the beach for the hostels nightly event, tonight was the bonfire! In the liqour store we purchased a large bottle of Jagermeister and some red bull ... read more

The journey from Tenerife to the start of the Southern Tier cycle route across the USA is an odyssey in itself, 36 hours from door to door via Madrid and Philadelphia. Still, if you can't put up with the discomfort of air travel how are you going to cope with long haul cycling ! But I must say its a great relief to get here with the bike and luggage intact. The motel is nice but in europe we associate motels with movies like 'no country for old men'.... read more

We left San Francisco on the 8th of July and after 11 hours of traveling by night ( 2 buses and 1 train) we finally arrived in San Diego! I instantly liked this place, more spacious, a lot cleaner and no hills!!!! Arrived at the hostel around 6 in the morning, body clock was so messed up but we found a mall right beside the hostel so nothing a bit of shopping therapy didn't sort out! We are in a dorm where there are so many different people coming and going its great and they all have their own stories to tell so we got a lot of advice for the rest of our trip! Its strange meeting so many people who are doing exactly what we are doing, some older some younger, but everyone has ... read more

Ian and Sandra finally arrived at our place on the 1st of November after the first two months of their world tour. So far they have spent five weeks in Europe and three weeks with Kate (Dan's little sister) in England and now they start the US leg of their tour. They arrived at a fantastic time too as Jacksonville Beach was hosting the annual Jacksonville Sea and Air Spectacular which is a two day air show featuring the ‘World Reknown’ Navy aerobatics team, ‘The Blue Angels’. Our balcony was a prime spot to watch the airshow and for two days prior to the show we had aircraft wizzing around our house. The Blue Angels in their F-18s often turned between our building and the apartment block over the road, so we had fighters hammering within ... read more
