From Explored Plant (Sara Horton), some pretty good hacks and hints for your pre-flight enlightenment. Take a photo of your parking location-Back when I drove to the airport often, I always parked in the same spot, always. I could find my car in my sleep. But I tend to have problems finding my rental car, often forgetting either the color, make or location!!! Contacts vs glasses-Long flights are difficult for contact lens wearers, particularly if you are able to sleep. Though I no longer wear glasses or contacts, I carry some artificial tears just in case. A refillable water bottle-This is one hint I rarely follow. Why? I tend to lose nice bottles. And they usually weigh more than a disposable plastic bottle. To each his own, I say. But it will save money! Always know-Certain ... read more

Everyone seems to have a bucket list, including Sherman's Travel. Of course, their motives are to get you to buy their travel packages. I have no motive, other than to tell you what I think about them. And I prefer to use the term. "Water Pail List" instead!!! Oahu North Shore-truly spectacular, biggest waves I have ever seen. While you are there, hit Giovanni's Shrimp Truc or Matsumoto Shave Ice. We also enjoy I Am Paradise (pearls and jewelry). Kentucky Derby-you must attend at least once, truly spectacular, often called the "most exciting two minutes in sports." Make sure you bring your best hat, visit the bourbon houses in downtown Louisville, and get to the track early on Derby Day. (pictured) Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street-most of you have already done this, but it never ... read more

We are tired of the hot weather! This weekend will range around 110 or higher in the great Valley. I think we need to drive over to the Monterey Peninsula and cool off!! I am sure Lexi would welcome her walks in cooler weather as well. But first, on the way, I think we need to stop at the factory outlets in Gilroy for a little retail therapy. Then after lunch, perhaps In N Out Burger, we will finish the drive to Monterey. Hopefully, we can visit a few dear friends during our visit. Also, I want to take Lexi to the beach, maybe drive 17 Mile Drive, and have some seafood pasta at Abalonetti on the Monterey wharf. For a real change of pace, I think I will hit one of the wine tasting rooms ... read more

I have attended this great tournament many times. I have also "worked" it, as I did some relief work when they had a pharmacy in the gift shop across from the Lodge. We got to meet many golfers, and famous people. Let me share a few stories with you. Perhaps the best and most gracious person was the actor, Jack Lemmon, who always brought his two full sized poodles with him to the week's festivities. He was always friendly to the staff, always signed autographs for the kids, and had the biggest smile on his face. On the other side of the spectrum was none other than Earl Woods, Tiger's father, who thought everyone should bow down to him. He smoked rather heavily, and always smoked inside the pharmacy even though the signs were posted to ... read more

Room service, for many years, was known as slow, expensive, and limited. But the pandemic has changed hotel room service standards. Menus have been expanded, time guarantees are offered, and in some cases, prices are the same as "dine in" options. Why? For one, the dining room may be closed, and room service is the only option. Two, they have expanded the options to include cocktails, to go along with their beer and wine. And third, and most importantly, their menus have been adapted to fit the room service option. By this, I mean more appetizers, finger foods, and "plates", meaning things like cheese platters, fruit platters, charcuterie, and Asian pot stickers. But there are a few hidden tricks to this whole process. The first is to know when to order. By all means, avoid the ... read more

From 2010 What is so magical about the Monterey Peninsula's Seventeen Mile Drive? We have taken the drive numerous times in the past. Sheri drove it once or twice daily when I worked at Pebble Beach. She would drive between our company apartment and the Lodge at lunch time and again to pick me up after work. We arrived Friday afternoon, after a stop at the factory outlet stores in Gilroy. We saw the sun peeking out from the soft cloud cover, revealing the magnificent Monterey coast and bay. The highway exit for Pebble Beach and Seventeen Mile Drive is a welcome sight. We checked into the Lodge, and got to see our dear friend Carol (from Peru). We settled down for a quiet and relaxing afternoon. Little did we know that we were assigned the ... read more

One last morning in George’s house in San Jose with Steve’s parents before leaving for our “Babymoon.” We made it out to a breakfast café called “Cup and Saucer,” that Susie and George really like, and had a big breakfast of the kids favorties: Eggs for Rosie and pancakes for Nathan. We were going to spend some playtime at Pump-it-up nearby but it didn’t open until 10, so we spent some time a Christian Book store in the kids play area looking at toys and books. At Pump-it-up, Rosie and Nathan were having a blast climbing around and sliding down the big slides together. The wipeouts and faceplants did not seem to bother them. Tory and Steve were sad to say their goodbyes to them for the next two days, but the kids didn’t seem to ... read more

Tide Pools and Relax Yesterday I got up pretty early and took off for the tide pools at Asilomar State Beach and Point Pinos. Low tide was expected at 8:30 - so I landed by 7:45 I think. Not bad for a vacation day. Point Pinos is supposedly labeled "The Great Tide Pool", least according to some on "the internets". It was a pretty cool area once I settled in. I wandered and wandered until I sat on a rock and discovered quite a few crabs eating and hiding. Around 9:30 I took off for "17 Mile Drive" - it's a drive along the coast line through the Pebble Beach neighborhood. I will admit - it took over three hours. I was distracted by "the nature". There were quite a few pullouts - and quite a ... read more
