It’s our last morning in California. Just time to squeeze in a parkrun. And an argument with daughter no 1 when she fills our suitcase with her shopping and tells me my dirty laundry will have to go in my hand luggage. As if California is helping us acclimatise to our return to the UK, we get up to find we have to scrape ice off the windscreen. Daughter no 1 has decided to join us and actually run parkrun this morning – only her 5th ever time. I say I will stay with her, but when the gun sounds, she sets of at such a pace that I can hardly keep up! We slow down a little and just miss her target of going sub 40 minutes; not bad for a non-runner after a week ... read more

Today daughter no 1 is giving us a tour of Stanford University. When I say a tour of the university, we are on foot and the campus is enormous so although we walk a total of 5 miles, we only cover a fraction of it. We take in the most important sights; the quad, the Hoover Tower, the church and the book store. Here, there are some books (obviously) but most of the store is dedicated to selling a monumental amount of Stanford themed tat. You name it, you can buy for an exorbitant price with a Stanford logo on. They have a whole section dedicated to Stanford outfits for pets! Finally, the most important attraction, a visit to daughter no 2’s office. Then, while she gets on with some actual work, we head to the ... read more

Today will mostly be taken up with travel. We just have enough time for one last walk along the strip. Preparations are ongoing for the weekend’s Honolulu marathon. We (I) play a very judgmental game of ‘here for the marathon/not here for the marathon’ with passers-by. Daughter no 1 says I'm a troll, then promptly joins in... Then it’s time to check out and head for the airport. Google maps suggests that instead of catching the bus (20) which actually goes in to airport and takes 73 minutes, we catch a bus (42) that passes nearby the airport and takes 60 minutes, leaving us with a ‘4 minute walk’ to the terminal, and is therefore, allegedly, quicker. We fall for it and catch the 42. Once off the bus, we have to cross 2 freeways, walk ... read more

I’m off to the USA for a couple of weeks with daughter no 1. It’s been a while. Since the beginning of the pandemic some 20 months ago, I’ve hardly even left the county let alone the country. But as we are finally allowed to travel to America and I haven’t seen daughter no 2 since she left to work in California 3 months ago, we’ve decided it’s time for a visit. We have managed to get a cheap deal. The bad news is this means transiting Frankfurt, making a long day that much longer. We get up at 3 am and drive to the airport. The rules of travel are complicated – we have to adhere to those set out by the Germans, the Americans and Lufthansa. We join the check in queue armed with ... read more

Day 94 - Townsville - Mission Beach (Magnetic Island) We caught an early ferry over to Magnetic Island from Townsville, a really pretty island just off the coast. When we arrived at the ferry terminal we hopped on a bus to one end of the island and from here we walked to some more secluded bay one of which was called Florence Bay and it was beautiful even with the dark clouds looming above. We had a little sit on a rock before heading back to catch the bus back and we were lucky to get to the shelter in time before it started tipping it down (it only rains on average on 45 days a year and we managed to be there on one of those days!). We decided to get the ferry back a ... read more

Hi everyone! Oke, so here it is, the way overdue first entry.. Don't act so surprised ;) I'll try not to write a book, although enough has happened and there's so much I want to share with everyone.. The last weeks have been more than hectic, the day after I arrived I was programming the experiment (thank god for that E-prime course we've had, and Darsin for the support and tricks over email haha) from 9.00 till 20.00, and in the time that has passed we completely programmed our first experiment, ran 76 subjects (with Emma getting a pneumonia as wll, so I ended up running subjects on my own from 8 in the morning till 6.30 at night), cleaned the data and are almost done with the data analysis.. So for the B&Cers in the ... read more
