After watching the Michigan State vs. Penn State game at The Old Pro in Palo Alto, I took the recommendation from a Penn State alum to head West up to highway 35 for the good views up there. You can see West to the Pacific (on a clear day), and across the Bay East to say Hayward and North of San Jose. My Spartans did not fare well on that day. However, back in State College Pennsylvania where it had snowed earlier in the day and was the site of the game, was much colder than in Palo Alto. Felt like about 75 degrees in the mid day heat. They claim The Old Pro is the best sports bar in the Bay area. They did have a lot of TVs there, and many games on at ... read more

I found out today from my mother, after telling her that I’ve been hiking lately, that my late grandfather was into hiking and that it was one of his favorite hobbies. I guess it’s in my blood, no wonder it feels good. Gracias abuelo! Our trip was to the Arastradero Preserve, a very nice place and scenic all throughout its landscape. Benjamin and I jumped out the car the minute we got there and foolishly headed the wrong direction on a trail, meanwhile gluing our faces on the map and pretending to know how to use a compass…we were definitely on training wheels using it, and this was proven when we ended up going the wrong direction and realizing that we were by the freeway and no where near the lake that we had planned to ... read more

It is now just under four weeks since we arrived back in the US and the details of our frustrating journey home are becoming a distant memory. The main entries of this Travel Blog are complete and we've (mostly Janice) almost unpacked all of the boxes and got our condo back to "normal". We're back to visiting the various coffee shops around Palo Alto and I'm back at the gym three or four times a week; routine is a wonderful thing (so is sleeping in the same bed for more than two nights in a row!!). So.....what was it like? Over 277 days we visited 36 countries, took 32 flights, visited 64 UNESCO World Heritage sites, had our passports stamped 69 times, received 8 visas and traveled tens of thousands of miles by ferry, bus, truck, ... read more

So, I made it to Palo Alto pretty easily. I do get tired driving at night though... I'll keep that in my pocket as a little note. Stanford is huge. I have to leave at 6 tomorrow morning because the freakin' ticketing starts then. Balls. But this way I'll be getting an early start. Okay, I miss you all. Love. ... read more

here i am getting ready to leave for Sweden. I will be living in the town of Lund and studying at the university there. Right now i am still trying to get all the paperwork filled and stressing about that.... i have to apply for all these permits and consulate passes etc and it is quite the ordeal especially since i cannot put my real life on pause for any of this! to make it even more confusing, most of the paperwork is either in Swedish or in poorly translated English. I'm trying to see this as a good thing, as that will be all i encounter for five months while I'm there! Right now one of my best friends is in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia (yes! all simultaneously and at the same time!) and it ... read more

Hello I am going to try this photo thing again, we had a lot of faff getting to Patricia's house in Palo Alto, mainly due to us having 3 different phone numbers for her, none of which worked because we didnt know you had to dial 1 before dialling anything else when you're in San Francisco. Anyway we managed to get someone from the information desk to help us in the end and we got to Pat's eventually. In the evening, Pat took us out for dinner to a place which is like a massive supermarket but there are loads of counters in there as well with buffet style food and salads and noodles and pasta and various meats and generally things to eat, aswell as chocolate so we had a nice time making up a ... read more

Just a quick thing because I was going to talk about that Aborigine issue in Australia, which is very interesting and it never makes the news in England, and I forgot to do it last time. Actually this whole thing is probably going to be embarrassingly wrong and you shouldn't quote me because I only watched a few news reports and listened to Chris and Pete talking about it, but anyway. Basically there are quite a few Aborigine communities in Australia, mostly in the rural bits, and I don't know about you but I always thought they were nice 'Nature People' who kept themselves away and lived in harmony with the animals and flowers and all of that, but it turns out that isn't so. They don't send their children to school, but still receive a ... read more
