After a long day of work we finally got into Mammoth at around 1:30AM. The entire drive up, the skies were as clear as could be, but as soon as we could see the mountain, and town, you could see a sort of fog over everything. That fog turned out to be a light snow. The keys for our unit were hanging on the door (late arrival), and about 6 other folks had already signed in on the sheet. I tried to sign in, but the ink in the pen was frozen. I think it was around 19F at the time.... read more

With a 3 foot storm on Halloween weekend, Mammoth Mountain opened on November 3rd. The first storm was wet and stuck to everything. I started work a week after the mountain opened and have been in skis 6 days/week since. On Saturday December 20th, I was freeskiing in the Dragon's Back area and became part of a herd of skiers traversing the ridge trying to find a line. I passed up the second chute and dropped into the third. As I turned under the rock ban, I saw a plume of snowy smoke and a ski, stuck nose-in backwards below a double crown line. I immediately called patrol while Scott began a beacon search. As soon as I got off the phone I received a relayed yell that the skier had been found and he was ... read more

Before we left Vegas, we had a quick bet for Joe - $20 on roulette, he came away with $10. Then we had the task of trying to get everything in the car - Oh yeah did I forget to mention we bought a suitcase?! Luckily 10 minutes later we were on our way, with the boot absolutely jam packed. We programmed our next hotel into the TomTom - 8 hours it said. A few sighs and and we were off! We passed through some near derelict towns, and some really pretty ones. There were a few scary moments like last year - Visions of films like Wolf Creek, The hills have eyes and wrong turn popping in mine and Joes heads - The fact that Thriller came on the radio didn't help either or the ... read more

Hey everyone! so this one is going to be a short blog- i just wanted to send at least a few pictures and check in.....so right now i'm in mammoth- 902 miles under my legs so far- and feeling sore but in the best shape of my life! I'm staying at my friend Shannon's place in Mammoth- a Villanova softball teammate- so it's been awesome seeing her and having a home to relax in. We got through the end of the desert, with lucky cooler weather- had some awesome times at some trail angel's houses- the Saufleys and the Andersons- its amazing the way people open up their homes to you- and just the generosity people show hikers on the trail- gives you faith in humanity in a way ;) The last 2 weeks we've entered ... read more

Call me crazy but who gets up at 1:30am and drives 5 hours just to hike around and drive back? Only I would do something as spontaneous as that. At 10:00pm Saturday night, I was just lounging around telling myself that I should go on a mini road trip. Since it was already pretty late, I doubt anybody would have wanted to tag along on such short notice. I decided that I would drive up to Mammoth Lakes and visit the Devil's Postpile National Monument. So I went to bed hoping to get a few hours sleep before I ventured off. Leaving at around 2am, I hit the road loaded up on coffee for the 5 hour drive. It seemed as if the only people on the road at this early hour were people driving ... read more

Now, where were we ? Ah yes, Jamie and I had just took off on the bikes for a ride around the harbour and for a bit of variety having ridden the beach route a couple of days earlier with his brother I led us inland to the area of the city that they call downtown. Crossing roads in America is an education in itself, jay walking an offence punishable by fine and it was at one of the many signalled crossing points that we were forced to wait. I turned to check Jamie's location as he pulled up behind me and watched in bemusement as, at the moment his wheels ceased to turn, he very slowly careered to one side. Unlike his brother he'd elected to wear Phil's cycling shoes which had been hanging seductively ... read more

Hey everyone... guest appearance here - its me, Nathan! I managed to get on here as Aydan usually insists on dominating this blog. So as the title says we just spent our last day at mammoth and we are driving out tomorrow morning to Reno with our housemate Joe, who intends to gamble his life away with Aydan. I may have to intervene if he gets on a winning streak or something. Theres no doubt we will be taking full advantage of the free drinks at the casino! ohyeah. From Reno, where we are staying for 1 night we will be taking the train and bus to San Franciscoooo and we will get up to mischief for about 4 days there before more travel takes us to LA to catch our flight home to Melbourne. ... read more
